    Travel guitar recommendations?

I'm not really sure, but the pickups are definitely more PAF style pickups which means they're lower output. I think split coils on lower output pickups generally sound terrible because the output is so low once you split in half. You could feasibly wire them in parallel to get them to sound a...

The rectos (amp and cab) are generally fizzy, especially with a 57 on them and also have a "scooped" kind of sound. Totally great sound if you're into that but I did note you mentioned you weren't super happy with the fizzyness in your OP. Greenback and Creamback Style speakers have less fizz...

Help with solving low gain issue

I would recommend using a factory preset first. You may have inadvertently edited your preset. Post the preset as well and others will check it out. Try the Brit800 Factory preset. If it's somehow "clean" then something is wrong with either the cable, guitar or input.

How much "wet" signal do you prefer to run?

I run my wet effects in parallel (100% mix) and use the level parameter to control how much of the wet signal is present. Makes it easier to run effects in the same column because, for example delays and reverbs don't interact with each other. I find this cleans up the clarity for wet effects...

What is the point of SPDIF if it's just going to be converted to USB anyway?

To add on what @chris said, You should also make sure you set your audio settings to "original sound for musicians" and turn that setting to "on" in the upper left hand corner (once enabled) Zoom tends to compress the audio and treat your guitar as background noise if you don't enable this. One way the sound quality would change in relationship to the output level would be if what you're feeding it into has a mic pre that will saturate with more input. Here's something to consider. Many of the default cabinets and speakers that have been associated with amps have also been due in part to the wattage handling and impedance of the speakers. A 100 watt marshall would never be able to go into a 1x12 blues jr cabinet, the speaker would blow up...

Seriously considering the FM9 MKII Turbo today

Yes it's based on the AC20, there are a couple variations in fractal land. I personally use the 12AX7 treble one, but the others are great too.
