    DL Whisky Show

Hey everyone! There are a few tunes from Leppard's Whisky show up on YouTube now. This was back in May 2022. As usual, all guitars and bass are AxeFx 3 direct. This was a fun show! Here's a link to one of the tunes:

Did we forget to celebrate the 6-year anniversary of the Axe-Fx III in January?

Wow! Didn't realize it had been 6 years since we heard it coming out of Petrucci's dressing room :)

Post Your Axe-Fx III Rigs Here!

Here is our B-rig. Pretty much the same as the A and C rigs.

    Ozzy cancels all tour forever

I saw him in 1989 - the "Pre-Viking" Zakk era.

    JZ's Brit Brown

Oh man - didn't even notice that level! I typically run the output down around -10db but I guess I never checked it on this one - good catch!

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

It’s actually pretty easy to hear since we’re using in-ear monitors. Even the subtle changes are noticeable so I don’t usually get too crazy. As far as Viv and Phil’s tones, they’ve pretty much been tweaked independently. Viv tends to have a bit wetter sound, and his guitars and playing style...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

So far I’m using the high cut in the preamp page of the cab block (usually 7500 - 8000k). Speaker drive around 2 and thump around 5. We’ll see how it works in the mix next month.

If I remember correctly it was a pair of studio monitors - Genelecs I believe.

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

A bit different - it's a little wetter compared to most of the other tunes, and I've been using a Dimension chorus for a lot of the other songs. We still experiment a lot, though, so it will probably keep evolving as the tour goes on.

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Hey everyone! I was asked if I would share some effects settings from Phil's rig, so here are a couple of blocks. One is the chorus in Love Bites, and the other is our typical delay setting. I've been liking the tape delay sound - I usually set a 75% ratio between the two delays, cut some...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Hey! Sorry for the delay - just back home after tour prep. I have a setlist programmed in the RJM so I just recall different scenes in each song, then step to the next song and do the same. We used to use IA buttons to turn individual effects on and off, but since the 3 has 8 scenes available...

    JZ's Brit Brown

Hey everyone! I've been inspired by the GOT series and the discussions, so I'd like to start sharing some of my presets and getting more involved in this awesome Fractal community. I was playing around with the Brit Brown model the other day and found myself really liking the sounds I was...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

While we were on the G3 tour in early 2018 John Petrucci had gotten an early Axe Fx 3. We were walking by his dressing room and heard it so we popped in to see it, and Phil loved it. I pulled up a Leppard setlist and he sat down and played bits and pieces of a bunch of Lep tunes. I remember...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

When I started working for Phil, they were already programmed. I never had to dive in and do any programming on those JMPs. From what I remember, it was pretty much a rhythm preset and a lead preset. The AxeFx was just for effects at that point in time.
  15. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

His JMP-1 units were stock (I think Viv's were modded). I actually didn't refer to those settings at all - I just went by ear. I pulled up a live recording that I would reference to make sure I was in the ballpark as I was tweaking.
  16. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I spent the better part of a day going through IRs when we first got the units - it was definitely a bit overwhelming to see hundreds of cabs to choose from. I would just write down the ones that seemed pleasing to me, and then I would try various combinations of those. Somehow I arrived at...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I do usually grab my own PC-1 if I'm working on sounds at home - it is one of his tour guitars that he was kind enough to gift me a couple of years ago (it's the one in the video) so it's a great reference for tweaking tones that we will use live. I don't typically change the basic amp tone for...

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I’m actually not quite sure what he’s doing out front - I do know that when I line check Phil’s rig it only takes a few seconds so I don’t think he’s doing much to it.

Mostly a Blackstar Silverline combo at home, but the FM3 sometimes as well.

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Just spoke to Phil about the tuning - funny story, actually. Apparently they had a strobe tuner in the studio that was a little wonky, so the tuning varied a bit throughout the recording.

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I'm not sure what Viv has going on for FX, but I seem to remember the 8 voice chorus being used for some stuff.
  22. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Here is some of the experimenting I've been doing - it's the JMP block from Phil's preset with a clean layer added. The clean on its own is pretty bright/thin but its main function is to add some sparkle/texture to the heavy tone. It works well for the chorus of Photograph.
  23. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I usually work on the presets with my in-ear monitors. I've found that it really does sound great at all volumes - just one of the things I love about the Axe Fx!
  24. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

I'm not sure about the tuning - I'll ask Phil about it. I kept the Input EQ low cut there to make sure the low end stayed tight. There was a FW update earlier this year that changed some things in the JMP model, so I had to do some tweaking to get it where we wanted it. The output EQ reflects...

Excellent! I'll try this on Phil's FM3 to get it closer to the III. You rock, Matt!

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

On Women I use the "'80's Style" chorus, 4 voice, and about a 20% mix for everything but the intro. The intro has the same chorus model, but 6 voice and a 48% mix. Delay is a Digital Stereo with a 50% L/R ratio (most presets are either a 50% or a 75% L/R ratio).
  27. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Phil did get an FM3 last year. I believe I used the 2 cabs from the III block that are panned L/R and it was really close to the III.
  28. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Yes - especially on Women. I have a scene just for the intro lick - lots of chorus and delay. The amp block settings are the same throughout the set, but the effects vary from song to song.
  29. jzguitar

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Yep. That's exactly what we use live. I spent a day going through IRs when we first got the III and these 3 seemed to blend the best for what we were after.

Gift of Tone #15 - PHIL COLLEN of DEF LEPPARD

Hey everyone! John here. I’d be happy to answer any questions. The cab block is exactly what we use live - 3 factory IRs (Left, Right, Center).
  31. jzguitar

What do you use scenes for?

For live use I use one preset per song. The scenes within the preset are for different song sections - all controlled by RJM Mastermind units.
  32. jzguitar

Live Workflow for Cover Bands - Song Lists vs Complex Presets

With Lep I use one preset per song, then different scenes for song parts (typically 3 to 5 scenes). This allows me to set delay times to the song tempos, tweak the amp blocks to fit the song/guitar choice, and tailor the other effects to the individual songs. The night's setlist is programmed...

    Axe-Fx III 16.00 Beta 8 "Cygnus" Firmware - Public Beta #5

Apologies if this has already been mentioned - seems that the Low Cut setting on the Input EQ page on several of my amps has been reset to default.

Plexi 50W 6CA7: Killer factory cabs

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 14.00

Any thoughts on the reworked JMP Pre block? I haven't updated to 14 yet, and that block is a large part of my job :)
  36. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

The sound from the Atomic CLR wedges just covers the area in front of the lower video screen on Phil's side. I don't think there is much guitar coming out of the other wedges, so it hasn't been an issue.
  37. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

Correct - Phil's presets are the JMP amp block into the cab block.

    Def Leppard - Vegas

Just saw this. Funny story - I had to make a scene just for Joe to yell “Bang Bang” at the end. His voice wasn’t enough to trip the gate so there’s a scene with no gate that I would switch to. Then I would immediately switch back to the normal lead scene for the last notes Phil plays. Kept me...

Axe-Fx 3 good and reliable for live shows?

A, B and C rigs with the III (main and spare in each rig) - all around the world this year and no problems.
  42. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

I know I used the JMP for Phil's presets and I'm pretty sure that's what Viv is using as well. Yes - Sav is on the III as well.
  43. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

We've got two Atomic CLR powered wedges onstage behind the smaller video wall. They are just for some stage volume since the Axe III is sending a digital signal out to FOH.
  44. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

The new rig signal path is: Shure Wireless > RJM switcher > AXE III > Atomic CLR powered wedges. The onstage wedges are just for monitoring purposes. We're using the AES digital output on the III to go to FOH and monitor world.
  45. jzguitar

Are Phil and Viv using Brit Pre or JMPRE-1 on the III?

From the JMP amp block right into a cab block (that consists of a blend of 3 cabs). Most of the chorus patches are the Dimension models.

Taylor acoustic into an Axe-Fx III

We're using a Tube Pre amp block for acoustics (no cab). Saves a line since it's coming down the stereo pair that the electric comes down. We've got 4 channels of wireless in the rack so the acoustic just gets one of the packs. Sounds great as long as I don't forget to switch to the acoustic...
