Axe-Fx III Firmware 28.02 Release

I'm having a problem with my AxeIII unit freezing too. Output meters are all at max but input meters respond to guitar signal input. It's happened at least a half-dozen times. I don't want to call it random because there may be a non-random issue I'm not aware of.

Here's some of my details:
  • Firmware 28.02.
  • Axe Edit always in use. [Axe-Edit III 1.14.13]
  • Plugged into Furman PL-8 Plus power.
  • Unknown if problem correlates to a specific patch, but will take note of patch if it happens again.
  • Same exact guitar every time.
  • At first I thought it may be related to using Logic with Axe-Edit open in background but has happened using unit with Axe-Edit alone, no other software open.

How's cpu usage?
Is it one specific preset?

Honestly, the Axe is a tech marvel that's so powerful I never usually consider these things.

I wasn't paying attention and would reboot before I even thought about it. No idea which presets were involved as I'm working on many different things, and will take a closer look at the cpu load. I have to say I use headphones plugged into the front of the Axe and super glad there's no sound when this happens.

Marvel or not, everything has its limits, and it's totally possible to go over the 80% max cpu recommendation, potentially causing freezes and other weirdness.

It's also possible for a preset to get corrupted, with unpredictable results. Not super common, but it definitely does happen. For that reason, make note of what preset(s) you're on when the freeze happens, and any other patterns.

Like troubleshooting anything, try to isolate the circumstances where trouble happens.

I realized the Axe will boot up with the last preset used.

I was on 0094 FAS Originals which clocks in at 47% CPU usage.

BTW, I'm a big fan of the FAS models and use them as a starting point for many of my patches.

I'm having the same problem. Same patches that worked for years are now crashing the unit.

Same here, not saying that the chorus are bad, just talking as the axe quite do it all already

Just that I don’t have that deep chorus even when I maxed it with the axe

The axe match very well the digital stuff, but the analog flanger or chorus got something special .

I have done a (very old) video presenting another chorus pedal that I own , again by electro harmonix. You cannot do that with the axe (forget maybe the beginning where it is the « double track » part of the pedal )

I have to admit that I really like the chorus models. I also can’t seem to get that real chewy analog chorus up front sound like a ce-1. Not a deal breaker, but maybe some day. Anyone have a functioning ce-1 they would be willing to donate to the cause? 🤣

The Axe-Fx chorus block is great. Turn auto depth off and it'll wobble & flail like the wackiest analog pedal.

Some of my favourite chorus tones live in the Flanger block. Having the ability to set the min/max delay times as well as advanced controls like the bass focus & VCO response are a chorii chasers dream.

If anyone wants some blocks matched to a real CE-1

This has been my experience as well. While the chorus in the Axe sounds great I can get a way more intense effect from my physical analog pedal.
Have you all tried turning off the auto depth then setting the depth for intensity, it usually needs to be lower especially as the speed of the modulation increases as auto depth is regulating this when enabled.

EDIT:
Missed Leon mentioning this above

In my opinion, you can do all of those sounds with the Mono Tape model in the delay block. There are technical reasons why it has capabilities beyond other blocks, but it is magical and worthy of being truly mastered.

chorii chasers
Tonight on Chorii Chasers: Armed with every block in the Fractal, Leon and the lads delve into the depths of the feedback, er, outback — but will they find a sublime swirling spacious sweetness, or just a wobbling wasteland of warbling wash?

(Cut to a closeup of a scorpion on Leon's knee. Panicked whispered voiceover: "Somebody... hand... me... that... signal... phase... inverter... QUICK!")
