I feel that 4 effects might be juuust a tad too limiting.
Especially when some effects are ate times kind of always on
I.e.: If you're playing something with reverb, delay and compressor you can't suddenly enable a drive and wah.
You'll have to switch presets and sacrifice something.
Doable I guess.
But I believe that since there are 4 footswitches, there will be 4 blocks per Footswitch (totaling 16 blocks). If so, that's more than enough, and each block can receive up to 4 channels.

I'd be happy with 4 blocks at a time, but I am truly bummed out to see that the 'looper' block is not included on the black page of the user manual that was leaked a few pages back. Hopefully this is just the initial firmware, and a looper will be added in a future update.

My dumb need for a looper probably knocks me off user list for VP4. I was hoping to ditch HX Effects from my 'amp' rig.

Yes, I have FM9, but it is such a pain to move it back and forth between rigs, I'd rather just keep a smaller separate board for my 'amp' dates. VP4 looks perfect otherwise.

So fingers are crossed that a looper will be added :disrelieved:

It is a matter of perspective. I think this will be seen as a competitor to the Eventide H9 / H90, Line6 HX effects / H One. It will have FAS quality effects, be able to run multiple algorithms at once, offer gapless switching, feature top quality A/D D/A converters, and is in a package still suitable for a pedal board. As long as the price is reasonable, this could become a very popular choice for tube amp devotees.
Analyzing here, in summary the VP4 (FX4) is practically an FM3. however:
  • without Amp
  • without Cab/IR
  • 435 effects
  • Has 104 Total Presets
  • Can be used as Preset Mode
  • Can be used as Scene Mode
  • Can be used as Effects Mode
  • Has Tap Tempo / Animator
  • Has 4 Footswitches
  • Has 4 Blocks per preset
  • Has 4 Scenes per preset
  • Has 4 channels per block.
  • Inputs for 2 Expression Pedals
  • has Envelope Follower
  • has ADSR
  • has Sequencer
  • has Modifier
  • has Pitch Detector
  • Has Midi In/out.
  • Has Effects Loop (Send/ Return).

Yes, but they cost more. And different markets.
Is there some latency of the amp/cab modeling in the AF3 (FM9 and FM3) that is absent from something like the VP4? The FM3 is already inexpensive (in my opinion) for all of the incredible stuff it can do. I am interested in the VP4 because I still like to use my amps, but I'm just wondering if I should get one if I already have the AF3, FM9, and FM3.

I have had problems with the Axe units when when using the 4CM because they gates are not all that effective. I don't know why, and this could be user error, but I nonetheless don't often use the the AXE in 4CM because of this.

As a former ultra/IIXL owner for about 10 years who moved back to pedals. I've been waiting for a good fx only device from FAS to compete with the eventide/strymon etc. This will likely be a buy for me. It will be neat if they even develop a line with these ie a smaller format as well. It will be nice to have the FAS effects available on my board. Hoping to replace the H90 with this!

As Cliff stated: the VP4 isn't a replacement for the existing products.

Latency: if you don't use amp/cab modeling on the Axe/FM3/FM9, there's also no latency related to those features.

BTW, the Axe is fantastic in 4CM.

There is latency in the amp block and the drive blocks due to oversampling in the Axe. Only the drives will have latency in the VP-4. It's very minimal latency though. If you stack drives I think you'll have 1ms of delay in additional to the I/O.
