Y'all see Kemper’s new business model drop this morning? Pay for an update to a pedal you already bought. Chris is out of his damn mind. There’s a reason my Kemper head has sat on my desk and collected dust for over 2 years.
That's unbelievably crazy.

Such an annoying business model but I have to give it to the UA and Neural marketing teams. They’re somehow celebrated for their pay-per-amp business models. UA is charging $400 per amp model in a far less convenient 1 amp per pedal format with no midi or XLR outs and they’re flying off the shelves. Neural has a similar model charging on a per amp basis for plugins and they were cheered when they added preset compatibility to the QC so they can charge people for new amps. But if line 6 or fractal charged for new amps they would be universally condemned.

I'm conflicted on it. Like I get it, and if I was Christoph, I guess it makes sense and turns a profit. But as a consumer, if I buy the product, then I kind of would think that the updates to increase the functionality and useability of the product would come with it.

I buy a product for what it is and do not expect changes or updates and will sell morning heart beat if the functionality I bought is turned into a subscription. I want what I paid for. If it is given free updates I like then I’ll install. I will never pay a subscription. I will be happy with what I bought as it is.

Wow, what a weird move: https://www.kemper-amps.com/products/at/profiler-player-upgrades.html
It’s like the BMW Heated Seats Subscriptions model. 🥴
The wording makes it sound like it’s just for the Kemper Player, so maybe the primary/flagship model will continue with the current free update model. Coming from someone who has never played nor had any interest in Kemper, but always worth it to know what’s going on with competitors.

We’re at a point where people have to choose between power and size, but as technology advances, they’ll be able to pack power in any size and there will be less reason for anyone to upgrade or buy more physical products. At that point, it would make sense for Cliff & team to figure out a paid SaaS model. Otherwise, less incentive for them to continue the work they’ve been doing. As much as I’m sure Cliff & team want to innovate for innovation sake, we all need to keep money rolling in to survive. To be clear, I’m not for buying a shell of a product that does nothing unless you buy packages, but releasing a product that does X really well, but you can add on Y and Z if you choose doesn’t seem like a bad business model. Just my two cents though.
