Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 2.02 Firmware Release

increasing the new Harmonics parameter softens the distortion, according to the notes. my guess is that it theoretically doesn't make sense to "harden" the distortion with this particular control?

For what it's worth, 0 to me makes my patches a bit mid range/warm sounding. Putting it at 460-500 gives me the right results.

Higher than 500 really allows harmonics to lash out in my opinion and also removes a little warmth. But as much as I like what it did to pinch harms, I felt my tone had a bit too much cut. Sort of like a presence boost.

My amps all sound normal running it at the settings I mentioned. 0 sounds wrong to me even if it's supposed to be the default. Just my opinion. :-)

Curious, no other more basic parameter to adjust for that? It's specifically this new parameter? I wonder what it was "set to" before we had access to it?

Hmm... The Mesa amps all seem to have more "throw" in the Master Volume - more usable range and they sound better, and feel better.

Restrung my Parker Fly today, haven't played it in about 6 months. Damn! Frikin niiiice with the Triaxis and the IIC+ Deep.

Hi Cliff/FAS,

have to say, never had a product or forum this proactive, active and responsive. I learned a lot n a few weeks period. Normaly i would wait till public releases, but with axe fx i keep up all the time and follow the betas and forum intensively.

thanks for the new release guys!

I'm confused on the harmonics value. In 2.01, I thought the default was set for accuracy for each particular amp. Is the harmonics value normalized in 2.02 so that zero represents the accurate value for the amp, or did 2.02 just turn it down for every amp?
RR

Hi Fractal !

Could we please get an answer on this ?

Thanks,
Ben

Just updated. I gigged with 2.01 last night and it sounded fabulous, so I updated here with trepidation. Tone-wise, it's all good. No problems there, and thank you again FAS, Amazing work!
My preset levels were much more balanced with 2.01 (after I levelled them). Now with 2.02 I needed to re-level them more akin to where they were circa 2.00. Not a problem in itself, 20 minutes sorting them out on the VU meters. What I'd really like in Axe-Edit is a button the brings up the VU meter display on the Axe-Fx front panel. Reason being, (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) I'm working on Axe-Edit and my actual unit is across the room, so each time I need to view the VU meter screen, I have to get up, go over to the unit and press the utility button. You might say I'm being lazy, but it's a chore when you have to do it 40-odd times every time there's a firmware update...

I've been messing around with fw2.02 for the last couple hours and I find that edge of break up tones (which is 80% of my presets) have some kind of stiffness in the breakup, it feels like the breakup is in the wrong frequencies (400 and 4K) making the tone less pleasant, less mix friendly and less musical than 2.01. Of course it can be shaped with eq, but that would require reprogramming all presets.. Also, on 2.01 I had lowered harmonics to 2-3 and it sounded perfect, now it's at 0 and i wish i could go below. Why isn't there the usual menu to select the modeling behavior like we had for q1? It'd be nice to compare back and forth

The harmonics knob seems to me like it works differently , 2.01 seemed to soften the amp by turning it down, 2.02 softens it by turning it up.
My observation here is 0 (default) is as far as you would want to go in that direction. If it's too stiff turn it up till it sounds right ( as Danny did).
If I were a betting man, I'd say Cliff will say "use your ears" it's there to tune it to personal preference.

The 2.01 firmware was so a huge step for me. The best firmware ever. The 2.02 is a complete different thing. I did resets on all parameters
but it still sounds, compared to 2.01, muddy to me and especially the thing everybody is calling "breakup" that was nearly perfekt in 2.01 is lost for me now.

Maybe it´s better now for the high gain stuff? Anyway I reinstalled 2.01 and happy again :-)

Similar experience here. I loaded 2.02 yesterday and found I had to relevel a bunch of amps - vol on some skyrocketed, particularly the OD 1 & 2 amps. Resetting the block didn't help for me. In addition to levels, many seemed to have a new brittleness that I didn't like. I ended up reverting to 2.01.

Use global eq to do it. Also try to reset the amp.

If it dosen't work, just stay on 2.01. No new amps, fx etc you're missing out on.

I did reset the amp blocks, and I don't want to use global eq as some presets (the dirtier) sound good, the problem only applies to edge of breakup presets. I guess I'll go back to 2.01 and see what happens next!

Clean & RESET to try the QUANTUM 2.02 release:
(Hope this is the right and cleanest)

1. Backup the previous presets and system from AXE FX with Fractal Bot (RECEIVE)
2. As I wanna try with new & updated blocks and parameters I saved & cleared all presets with AXE Edit Preset Manager
3. Did a clean procedure with UTILITY RESET system parameters (including strip all global blocks & amps to default)
4. Loaded Quantum 2.02 for AXE FX Mkii and also the latest Quantum Factory BANKS
5. Only loaded Quantum 2.02 (with ONLY USB as a connection, all other connections not connected)
(PS if you want there are also some way's to have banks and system cleaned with special syx files!)

Now I can:

A. Start with new presets to try some amps
B. Load previous presets (and in this case have to RESET amp blocks and do some tweaking as it's according to this forum not a 100% match and some alterations. And as there are also some NEW algoritems and new parameters, it's best to do this, Right?)
C. Load Factory Presets into either all banks OR just into Bank C (which is empty as I do not have soooo many presets ;)

So HOW do you guys do it?
And which steps should or could I skip for sure?

AND
Is a RESET for amps (always) needed for the factory presets for this quantum release or even for older and newer?

EDIT
- New factory banks available for Quantum 2.01 http://www.fractalaudio.com/firmware-presets.php
- Do not forget the AXE Edit REFRESH! As I always seem to forget ;)
- Note/debate: Utility Reset should be done AFTER the Firmware.

As far as i know the latest factory sound banks are from March 2015, if I remember correctly that was fw 18 or 19..
