The footswitches don't need to be fixed: they're working as designed.
FX8 switches 1-8 have dual functions: tap turns an effect ON or OFF and hold switches it between X and Y.
Therefore, the unit needs to wait for the up so it can measure the time interval to detect which of the above you are trying to execute.
We have talked up a few ideas that could make "down-switching" effects possible, but they all come with sacrifices attached.
For example: we could add an option to disable hold X/Y switching (leaving scenes to handle it). Or we could allow you to sacrifice some other footswitch function (Scene? Looper? True Bypass?) to create a dedicated X/Y Switching Mode.
In practice though, I've found that it is better if you just get yourself used to "slapping" the footswitches so changes feel instantaneous. All these other options add complexity and remove flexibility.
In no time, you'll be used to it, and I think you'll be glad for it.
