Your top 5 brutal metal amp models

Put 6550's in a 5150 block and go. Change the cabs to change the flavour.

If you want to go a different route, put a rat and/or pi fuzz into a clean fender into a 412.
I completely forgot about running a tube screamer into a rat into my Fender Pro Reverb back in the late 80's...thanks for reminding me about it!

Do you mean in the FM3/Axe FX? If you wanna move the MV to post-phase inverter your amp becomes even more pissed off, it’s great

Thanks for the info, good to know.

I was actually asking Leon if there was another video before Pimp My Plexi where he talked about moving the MV location. It seemed the one he posted was from a series...

So far for me:

1.) Engl Savage. Continues to impress me in every way, especially channel 1. Also does solos equally well as riffs unexpectedly.
2.) Engl Powerball - It has the rawness of a 6505+ but also that signature ENGL compression and sounds great on riffing.
3.) Peavey 6505+ - When boosted, just like the real amp, it does brutality just as well as any amp. I just don't prefer the quality of the pinch harmonics.
4.) Das Metall - Whereas I don't think the Dizzy VH4 sounds great for metal, somehow Das Metall is great for brutal stuff. Just didn't sound quite as beefy coming through my cab as it does in the mix on my headphones which is why it isn't higher on the list yet, need to tweak more for a live scenario.
5.) Diezel Herbert - the 3rd channel sounds amazing for extreme metal. Maybe a little better for the tech stuff than the straight up brutality but still awesome.

Honorable mention to the Bogner Uberschall, it can sound amazing but is very difficult to dial in. Will update more as I refine our rehearsal sound more.

Wow, FAS Brootalz is insane!

I love me some Recto 2 Modern too for some crazy chugs.

Friedman HBEs (2010 esp) are my favorite amps in the Axe Fx hands down.

1. FAS Modern I
2. USA IIC++
3. JVM OD2 Orange
4. SLO100
5. Engl Savage

Honourable mentions: 5153 Red, 5150 Block Letter, Orange Rockerverb, Fryette Deliverance, FAS Hot Rod.

My main go-to is the Atomica High, but a surprisingly great sounding model for brutal high-gain tones is also the Hot Kitty model. Another surprisingly good one is the 1959SLP Jumped model - you can get brutal rhythm tones while retaining dynamics that a lot of other models lack.

If I want a metal sound, it’s the JP2C model. It does the 2C+ thing without the fiddling. It just sounds awesome. Can’t believe there isn’t as much love for it in this thread.

I like the BE/HBE with the sat switch for a Marshall sound. I don’t like JCMs IRL or on the Axe FX.

I also like all the 5150 models, like everybody else.

But the JP2C model just does something I love with every axe I try it on.

If all we got was the FAS versions of amps I think we'd be well covered and still ahead of all the "other" modelers out there.
I think if FAS made a small-footprint digital pedal (say, Boss 200-series sized) with only the FAS amps on it, it would absolutely decimate the AIAB/pedalboard amp market. Honestly, the FAS high-gain amps alone can cover so much ground, it's not even funny.

I really dig the FAS amps. The Modern III and Brutalz are outstanding high gain amps, the Hot Rodded Marshall one is probably my favorite of all the higher gained Marshall models and the Buttery is so, so sweet. I REALLY love that Hot Rodded Marshall, it’s pretty much exactly what I go for when sticking a drive in front of an 800, without needing any tweaking.

That said, my main heavy preset is a dual amp one; a IIC++ and a Recto, panned hard L/R and using different cabs. When I go to double track I just reverse the cabs and get each amp on each side, it’s the most efficient way of getting a really full, metal guitar tone. It’s just about stopped me from quad-tracking things because it fills out the sound just as much.

What are your top 5 amps in the AxeFx 3 that have given you the most brutal metal sound?
Here’s mine

1.) Mesa Rectifier 2
2.) Engl Savage
3.) Mesa USA 2C+
4.) Friedman BE
5.) 5153 100w

I’m curious to try and create some new beasts
1) FAS Skull Crusher
2) 5153 red channel
3) FAS Hotrod / Brootalz
4)PRS Archon ( gain at 7 to activate some more gain stages like in the real amp) - this is by far my absolute favourite amp cause it can do everything from thall / djent to old school metal to great cleans and blues)
5) FAS Modern 2
6) 5150 block letter.

Been stuck on VH4 channel 4 for awhile. It has this gooey compression which kicks when the gain is past 4 or so. However, that leads me to ask: what cabs/IRs do you all like for high gain?
