Your top 5 brutal metal amp models

1. Engl Powerball
2. JCM-800 with tube screamer
3. Diezel

Those do it for me. I barely eq them. I find trying different cabs give me the tonal combinations I want.

If you want dry aggression then ya the engl savage is a good starting point. Cant recall the IR I have set up. I generally dont go for that type of tone (5150/marshall) but if you want it, that and the Fryettes should do it.

I clearly have specific tastes 😂 in no particular order other than the order I thought of them:

1) USA Pre
2) JP2C+ Yellow
3) 5150 Block
4) 5153 100w Red
5) Energyball

I like the IIC++ a lot too but only really use it with a VH4 for full-on Hetfield wannabe stuff so I can’t really say it’s in there on its own, from my experiences.

I'm still discovering new amp models every day, but I gotta go with the Friedman HBE 2018 C45, the FAS Modern, and the USA Lead Bright.

I have never found a high gain 6L6 amp I liked very much.

Anyone have a high gain model suggestion with EL34’s as a non stock substitution?

maybe not el34
but try the Uberschall w KT88
the DZL w KT77

Thanks, will do!

What I’m looking for is a more smooth frequency response top to bottom. It always seemed to me that 6550 amps had that, but didn’t have the smoothness of an EL34 when pushed just a little.

I know power tubes don’t have a “sound”, but I’m referring to how they handle very low levels of compression, and how that affects the tone and dynamics...

Try them in everything. I ran EL34's in my old mesa roadster (recto) and thats when I learned I want high gain marshall, not high gain mesa.

The cab IR will make a big difference too. Example: pull up a 5150block amp, and try a GB 70s marshall cab, an orange v30 cab , and a mesa recto standard cab (412/sm57). Try each, try blending, mess with smoothing and proximity in the cab block.

Then try the jcm800 and cab of choice with the rat drive block in front.

Thanks again, tried a GB mix, which was an improvement over the Basketweave mix I had chosen previously for the 5153 50w Blue.

Oddly I haven’t had much luck with the JCM800s in the Axe. But then again, my main amp is a heavily modded JCM800 50w, which is not like any of the modded amps in the Axe...
