What would the new-gen even have that the current gen doesn’t?

Coddle....LOL!

People that dislike technology evolution truly baffle me.
Reminds me of my wife (who is 12yrs younger than me) saying she would never get a cell phone that didn't have a physical keypad. "I'm never moving to a full touch screen!".
Personally, I love tech - but not the stuff that just distracts from my primary purpose without much added utility while adding cost.

There’s been a lot of talk about what Fractal’s next gen product will be, but I don’t really understand what could be added to the AxeIV, FM3, and FM9 next-gen that isn’t already on those units now. The only thing I can think of is capturing, but that’s not really Fractal’s cup of tea. I do wish tone match was added to the FM3 and FM9, but I don’t think that will ever happen.
would like to be able to create nodes in the PEQ and drag them in Axe Edit instead of inputting values- also an A/B function when modifying a preset and/or a undo/redo ability when editing

I think the main thing for me would be more meta data and assignable lables:
  • A comment field for presets. Great for personal reminders and even better for sharable presets that could highlight for instance what expression pedal is assigned to what function, or a reminder to remove a block if there's no expression pedal 2, or whatever it could be.
  • Custom Labels for Channels, which could then be visible on the foot controller. Instead of Drive 1A, it could be labeled as Klon and Drive 1B could be labeled as Screamer. This would make it a lot easier to have toggle switches between channels, to show what they've actually set to.
  • Visible defaults. If I'm playing around with the brightcap or the input EQ, I would find it very helpful to have a visible representation of what the default value is if I want to return a value to its default.
A complete wet dream would be for the Axe Fx family to have an API. Lets say there was 16 custom blocks where it would be possible to load blocks from 3rd parties, similar to custom cab IRs. Using the API, other companies such as Strymon or Electro Harmonix could create and sell blocks for the Axe Fx that we could then buy, load and use. That would mean that Strymon or EH would not have to give up their properietary algorithms but we would still get access to them without using external pedals.
Yes it's really frustrating to not know what amp block for example, is on a certain channel when you come back to it later esp. when you've made changes and renamed the block

Well, my example was the drive block, that doesn't show on the front panel or in AxeEdit without actually selecting the block.
Ah i see.

Your post (back in May, to be fair) was about customizing switch labels per scene, so instead of Drive 1, it could say Klon in scene 1, and Photon in scene 2. Is that right?

It would be great if switches could be labeled with the model name, not just block name. But that's really only helpful if the model is the difference between channels, not, say gain, or treble, or trem speed.

My suggestion was really to have custom labels per channel, and being able to use that channel label for switches. So if I have three drives I'm cycling between, say a Klon, a Klon with more level (Klon+) and a 808. If I had my own label for that channel, the switch could display "current channel" which then would say Klon, Klon+ or 808, or whatever I wanted to when cycling between channels. Hope that makes sense?

Yes that'd be great, agreed.
Next gen maybe, i doubt there's memory for that now.

Axe-Fx III already has this. They're only available for XLR female connectors. XLR male connectors don't have enough space to fit a 1/4" jack between the pins.
Totally right, must be some fatigue here I guess 😉. Actually working quite late at night on my future spaceship for flying to 2026😂😂.

I would love to have a possibility on a new Axe Fx hardware to lock the output level potentiometers for output 1 and 2 on the front panel. Either by hardware if there is such thing (like press inward & lock and release it in order to adjust it) or by software to lock the whole front panel (maybe already implemented?)

I'd be wary of doing that with the hardware, seems like it'd just be adding one more point of failure. A software option would be great though! But I wouldn't blame Fractal for not wanting to deal with people like "MY OUTPUT KNOBS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING????" bc they changed the setting and forgot.

I doubt there is any way they would ditch the rack form factor. I do think the FM9 is super cool for fly dates, but the rack form factor is industry standard.
i would have to disagree. who else besides fractal does a rack modeling unit? Line6 did but not with the stadium. its seems to be fading fast.

I could be wrong, but isn't the Line 6 rack unit coming later?

Personally I've always thought that having to run a line from your floor unit back to your amp and speakers in the backline was dumb. At least with a rack unit you have the choice of running a guitar wireless to your backline rack, and that's it.

I'm not just talking about modelers, I mean power amps, wireless units, IEM units, power conditioners, these are some of the things that still have to go in a rack. This part is all super subjective but IMO modeling really starts and ends with fractal in the professional space so I don't care much about the other manufacturers choices, my experience with them is they all seem to forget some critical part of the live workflow or sound plastic to me.

I understand that, I have ton of rack gear. im talking modelers and guitar preamps and effects.
only new rack guitar preamp to come out recently is Headfirst alta pre. Everyone in the modeling department seems to be floorboards and I don't see Fractal using a smaller touchscreen than line6 but who knows at this point
