Solos that are songs in and of themselves?

Name songs that include these solos. I'll start it off with: Boston's Hitch a Ride, ZZ Top's I Need You Tonight, and Hotel California. :encouragement:

Those are classic. In a more modern yet to me just as classic I will add 'Song from yesterday' BCC/Bonamassa.....epic!

that's one thing that attracted me to Michael Schenker's early work with UFO.
(Force It and Obsession albums, and songs like Doctor, Doctor)

Neil Schon from Journey does it well too.

They were really melodic pieces inside songs that to me, always sounded like a song within a song

Many of Randy Rhoads' solos are mini compositions...

Crazy Train, Diary of a Madman, etc

No More Tears (Zakk Wylde/Ozzy Osbourne)
Sound Chaser (Steve Howe/Yes)
Black Light Machine (John Mitchell/Frost*)
Most Maiden songs from Piece of Mind to Seventh Son
Most Dream Theater songs

Nice idea for a thread.

Here are some more suggestions:

  • Intro/Sweet Jane - Lou Reed, Rock'n'Roll Animal (1973) - Hunter and Wagner tear it up, before Lou opens his mouth ;)
  • Firth of Firth - Genesis, Selling England By The Pound (1973) - Hackett expands Gabriel's flute theme into a fully-developed song of its own

David gilmours a pocket full of stones. another example of where the guitar solo seems to have lyrics or like it us speaking words with notes.

Regards,

Wishbone Ash--Throw Down The Sword

Bowie(Mick Ronson actually)--Moonage Daydream. Could be said for almost any Ronson solo. He was a master at that. In the stuff with Ian Hunter too.
