So frustrated I want to throw the AX8 in the Trash

I too have experienced this phenomenon frequently and have simply re-start my computer...works every time.

I looked around a bit and found this thread:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/hvIIowHSQow/Er77B3L4EQAJ
With these instructions for Chrome:
1. Click menu icon in top-right corner and go to Settings.
2. Click "Show advanced settings".
3. In "Privacy" section, click "Content settings".
4. In "MIDI devices and full control" section, check "Do not allow any sites to use system exclusive messages to access MIDI devices".
5. Click "Done".
I'm curious to hear if this resolves the problem.

On a sidenote, I don't know if it was a cost issue or what but USB 1.1? In this day and age?

That setting only allows/prevents web apps from sending/receiving MIDI SysEx (system exclusive) messages - it has nothing to do with access to the MIDI hardware otherwise.

What browser is everyone using now instead of chrome? I switched to chrome when I started having gmail security issues with Firefox. And I can't stand Internet "Exploder"

I would give it a shot with a good 6 foot cable. I know it sounds a little crazy, but I don't have any issues with that and do occasionally on longer (15ft) ones. It's been my only glitch with the unit so far.

I used to use Firefox, resisting the proprietary Chrome. At some point I think Google made a conscious effort to screw up their sites for Firefox users, to push them to Chrome. Since I am addicted to gmail and google calendar, I sucked it up and switched to Chrome. Might be interesting to go back now and see if Mozilla/Firefox developers have overcome the hurdles that Google created:

This is another good browser:
