Single External controller problem

Question for the masses because I am not sure what I am doing wrong here.

I just want a single external controller hooked up to the II. I went ahead and purchased a Volume pedal, two guitar cables, and a stereo breakout adapter to break out the tip and sleve. I made sure that the volume pedal is working correctly but, I cannot get it to work as an external controller

-Breakout adapter connected to the back on the II. Two cables looped to the Volume pedal
-Extern1 attached to the volume block volume parameter.

Can anyone speculate what my major malfunction is?
 
A volume pedal will not work as an expression pedal. You need an expression pedal.
