Recommend a Mic for acoustic guitar recording

Give it a whirl! Another note is to play with placement a lot. I like my M160 about 8 inches from the neck at the 12th fret, angled about 15 degrees or so toward the body's port. Try a few different things, but I've found that's a good starting point that's not too bassy or boomy, and captures a lot of detail.

Anyone have experience with Warm audio mics? there's also a WA-14 for $100 more than the AT4040...looking into it

WA gear can be pretty hit or miss, and certainly don't hold resale value very well from what I've seen.

Honestly though, any reason you don't want to try an SM57 first? They're cheap, good to have around anyway, and will do this job very well. IMO you don't need expensive/fancy mics to get good recordings, it's more about knowing how to use them. Does having a nice mic locker help? Sure, more options can't hurt, but I think the biggest benefit in a big mic locker is more having different polar patterns available.

So i have a line on a used AT4040 for a great price. I'm thinking this to start just to get me going on an overall good capture on acoustic and will keep an eye out a good price on a secondary SDC mic perhaps something like the SM81
I have an early version of the AT4033a that sounds great, and also had an AT4050. I think the AT4040 is a large diaphragm like the 4050, whereas the 4033 is a medium diaphragm.

Somewhere along the way I sold a lot of stuff that included the 4050 but kept the 4033 because I liked it and always got positive comments when used on vocal tracks. I still use it on occasion for (budget) VO work when someone asks.

Just my limited experience and I have no idea about the quality of the AT mics these days.

Yeah passing on the Warm audio after a bit more research and as mentioned...resale value not that great. likely stick to the AT4040 for now. I know the SM57 is a total studio staple but to start I want condenser mic. 57 might be a great second mic tho.

Bought the AT4040. Will have it in hand in a few days.
