Fixed Rat Distortion and sound drop

md1234

Inspired
Hi, i was investigating this thread with it's preset:
https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/output-going-silent-while-playing.204879/
I noticed in that preset that the Distortion knob (in the Rat Distortion) had a bump/bleep/pop in the sound when changing the value. In the preset (in the mentioned thread!) this knob has a "Envelope follower" attached.

So to specifically address that bump/bleep/pop, i made this Bug-thread. I created a new preset (see attachment Rat1.syx) that contains a Synth block to generate tone, which goes through the Drive pedal with Type Rat Distortion enabled. The Distortion knob has a LFO1 modifier attached to scroll through values around the 2.9 - 3.0 value, and like in the investigated preset there is again a bump/bleep/noise hearable. I haven't heard this on other types so that's why i created this new thread.
BE CAREFULL WHEN LOADING THE ATTACHED Rat1.syx PRESET, BECAUSE THE SYNTH BLOCK HAS TRACKING OFF... it will immediately produce sound on OUT1 and OUT2!

But... while i'm typing this, and was hearing the Synth block producing sound and running for about three minutes, the sound suddenly drops completely on the outputs (also headphones)! I made the attached photos of both Meters pages when this happened for the first time.

Restarting the FM9 brings the sound back.

When I disconnected everything expect the power cable, turn the FM9 off, turn it on after 10 seconds, put headphones in the PHONES output, and load the attached preset (Rat1.syx), the sound drops again after a few minutes. So this sound drop is reproducable, i have had it multiple times in the meantime, and i made a video of that.

00:00 starting a state where the (attached) preset is loaded.
03:06 sound drops, i was taking a coffee
03:33 me thinking twice what to do next
03:59 me loading a different preset with FM9-EDIT and checking the views
04:24 me turning the FM9 off and on
05:20 me loading the preset again with FM9-EDIT (skip the next few seconds where SPDIF is changing from clock source)
11:50 me checking the views
12:22 sound drops again

I also made backup of the system in case that might give you extra info:
  • FM9-240426-114546-system+gb+fc.syx which i made while the FM9 was in 'error-state'.
  • FM9-240426-114734-system+gb+fc.syx which i made after reboot.
However, Winmerge says those files are identical, so that might not be of any help.

I'm on firmware 7.00, April 15 2024.

If you need anymore info, or if you can (or can't) reproduce the problem, please let me know!

This has been fixed for the next release.
I've seen "Fixed clicks and pops can occur when adjusting drive level of Rat Distortion." in the release notes of 25.02 for the Axe-Fx III :)
So I am curious if you were able to reproduce the 'sound drop'-part of my bugreport, was that related to the Rat Drive bug?
