R.I.P. Bob Weir

This is from 1974 even though the video says 1994 in the beginning. It’s great version of Weather Report Suite one of my favorites by Bob Weir. Then also Eyes of the Wold and A really heart wrenching China Doll. I dont know if this is with the Wall of Sound, but I swear Owsley is playing with the sound especially the bass. Phil is on fire. It’s best to listen with headphones, even better with some mind enhancement.😵‍💫

Besides a lot of wonderful music, what sticks with me is the vision of what a band and music and the world can be. That you can find new magic on a lot of nights, by being open and free together, invoking and conjuring it up and celebrating it fresh each time. To have faith enough to leave space for the spirit to appear between you, to make that search the thing you do, the thing that IS you, not only in music, but as a human in the world. Corny as it may be to say, I'm incredibly grateful for what they showed us is possible.

I was able to attend about 55 GD shows (with only one of them being after Jerry was gone and I did see his last show at Soldier Field). There was always a vibe that I have never experienced at any other concerts. A spirit that permeated the entire event, regardless of where it took place (though Alpine Valley dates were easily the most transcendental). They were not my favorite band (yes, I do like their music a lot but not in my top 10), but the experiences of attending their shows were some of the most spiritually fulfilling musical events I have ever known!!!

My first GD show was Sept 1982, Capital Center in DC. This will show you how much things have changed. I was in my senior year of HS and we drove from south central PA. For anyone who knows the area I83 south to the Baltimore Beltway at afternoon rush hour. We were in a 70’s Ford F150 with at least six in the back open bed and 4 or 5 stuffed in the cab.It was ann insane drive. Today we would have all been pulled over by 10 police and searched rigorously.

We made it there alive and still remember driving into the parking lot. Totally mind blowing. First thing that happened was a spaced out dude coming up to me asking where he was and if I could help him find his friends and car. I was just beginning to become very spaced out myself and I was like, “sorry dude I have no idea”. He just disappeared into a sea of tie dye.

I had seen them about 10 times during the mid 80’s. I was somewhat a stoner then, but I was really there for the music. I have always been an improvisational player and immediately was sucked into that aspect of their show. I got to see a couple very good shows even though Jerry was in and out of his China White love affair. Well they were all great shows. My favorite GD period is the 70’ to 75’ and then the period I jumped on the bus. I loved Brent Mydland, but Keith Godchaux was an excellent player and improviser. I could go on and on about some of wild experiences I had at shows, but right now I’m bumming pretty hard about Bob Weir. I got this way with Phil. I almost get more bummed than when Jerry died. I guess with Phil and Bob it really closes a significant chapter in my life and I’m guessing many others.😔

Yeah probably shouldn’t have posted it. I was feeling emotional a bit. I guess our bass player is into AI.
Understand, and I certainly empathize with the sentiment; the world is poorer for the loss of them both, along with Pig, Phil, Keith, etc.

I did find it ironic that most of the time, AI photos seem to mutilate undamaged hands. In this case, AI actually fixed Jerry's amputated finger.

Sad news indeed. Never been a huge fan of the Grateful Dead or their offshoots, but I have nothing but mad respect for the man. He left a huge legacy and affected many people in a positive way.

Here is a cute pic of Bobby having fun with John Mayer (they are both apparently tricksters/pranksters so all in good fun)! This is not real but amusing none the less for those of us who do not have a stick up their arse.

Spoiler alert, some may find this offensive so I am putting it in a spoiler container. If you are easily offended, do not open it ;~))
