No, because different people have a preference for which side (or even both sides) they put their pedals/switches on. The middle is probably the best overall location.

Ah man, what a bummer. Have enjoyed using a 2-button switch with my FM3 for Preset +/- and was planning to do do the same with the FM9.

I use one switch to do that. Tap = + hold = -

I have it configured that way on my FC-12... not a fan (strictly personal preference). I am a big guy with bad knees and holding a switch often causes me to lose balance.

You can still use it! If you don’t need two expression pedals, you can use one expression and both switches. You’ll just need a stereo breakout cable (or similar) with the female end connecting a TRS cable to the switch and the TS ends going into separate jacks on the FM9.

I actually discovered the stand-in switch setup because of this. That worked out really great. All’s well…
