Please Help Angus Young 1959 tone

Hey there,

I need a little advice. I’m looking for Angus Young‘s tone as heard on Highway to Hell. It’s something in the decay of the amp when you strum the guitar. Is the overtones of the background fizz in the tone. It’s sounding like there’s a constant „ssssss“ in the background. When the Tone decays it changes from „ssssssss“ to „shhhhhhhhh“ before vanishing completely. I know it’s hard to describe.

I can hear it pretty good in the Blankenship Leeds model. But I find it to be thicker and smoother in Angus Young‘s tone. Just listen to Highway to Hell and it might make sense…

Anyway. Are there any tweaks that I can do to make the SLP 1959 model of the Axe sound like on the album?

Thanks for all your help

And merry Christmas

I think this video covers what you are looking for.

One thing I am aware of is there is a bright cap mod on his amps. Basically reducing the value to tame the brittle harshness.

Your description of the issue sounds like it might be the same thing, even though it is not the same amp, that others brought up to Cliff, and his ultimate response follows:
After updating to 31.01, I’m hearing strange high-end ringing/feedback on the Jazz 120 amp model that wasn’t present before.
If you get a chance to take a look, I’d appreciate it. Thanks for all the continued work on the firmware.

I was able to recreate this. I don't know what I did but it just started doing it. It's also measurable. A bunch of even order distortion is being generated at the input of the preamp. I have no idea why. I reran the simulations and they aren't doing it.

I rebooted and it was still doing it. Rebooted again and the problem went away. So there is definitely something odd going on.

I will get to the bottom of it.
So suggest you stay on the previous firmware until this gets resolved, which I expect will be in the next iteration, likely 31.03. When will the next update occur, depends on how quickly Cliff can determine the source of this issue,

Thanks for pointing that out - that’s exactly what I was referring to. A few others noticed the same thing as well.
I had a feeling Cliff would sort it out. No rush on my end - hope he’s recovering well and enjoying the holidays.
Knowing Cliff, he’s probably already tinkering with it anyway

One tip Cliff mentioned several years ago was to put two Dynamics Processor compressors as the first things in the signal chain. Set the Dynamics control of one to 1.00, set the other to -1.00. Definitely does make a difference.
I believe the Compander type in the Compressor block was created just for this effect.

Did two threads get merged here? The first 3 posts are about getting the Angus Young sound, then 4 and 5 are talking about a firmware issue, quoting a post that doesn't exist in the thread.

No, in the first post @ToneAddict mentions he is getting “sssssss” that decays to “shhhhhhhh”, and I reference a post in another thread that was talking about these artifacts. Hope that helps connect the dots.
Cheers
