Keep it simple, the AXE FX has most everything you could need. A good tube power amp and furman should complete it. Im not a fan of the BBE i uesd to use one, not for me. Although I use a Valvulator which takes the rollercoaster effect out of your signal and helps more than you would think. But its not a must. Make sure what ever case you use has eneough space for the powerhead to breathe. 1-2 spaces between the head and the AXE FX. Ive used racks for years and find them to be more effective and convinient.

This is a classic idea! Is there such a controller out there? I'd love to have a few knobs available for some of the things that aren't quickly accessible on my floor midi controller (like the amp controls mainly - TMB, drive, ect.)

I must say that a distressor before the Axe-fx is awesome. The compressor in the Axe is quite capabel but can't come close to the distressor. It's quite expensive but it is also good for vocals and bass so I really recommend it.
