Original samples for live covers? (legality)

Not all venues pay though and a lot don’t even have a clue they are supposed it. Lots of venues don’t have proper sanitation, don’t card minors etc. Many only do what they think they can’t get away with, or pay if caught.

Again, I think this is more of just an academic debate given the circumstance, but I would guess “I thought the venue covered it” isn’t a valid excuse

Actually, it can be. At least it is here. A bar just recently stopped having bands, and I think was even shut down for a while, for not paying fees. The bands were not responsible at all, nor did they get fined. There is a system in place to cover your back, which is a good thing for us.
