Because that is how total sync works from the Axe-fx. It sends the preset's name and effects states to the MFC-101.

For the MFC-101 to send the data to the Axe-fx, it needs to send a program change. That program change needs to be stored somewhere (in presets on the MFC-101).

The way around this would be for the MFC-101 just a slave to the Axe-fx. that would probably take some extensive reprogramming.
