with only just over 5 million people living here across our two islands there’s not a great market for used guitars, so I had to take a risk and shop over in Japan

I was not disappointed. Not only is it pretty to look at, I get why they call them Burst Killers; there’s a certain attack and depth to the tone that even a good Les Paul doesn’t quite achieve.

Anyway, time for pictures

One of my students has one of the Gibson "Yamano" 335's from that era that looks very similar - amazing guitars!

mine came with a Yamano booklet, no certificate though.

There’s also a hang tag “get online with Gibson - CompuServe”. Tempting, but I don’t think this internet thing will ever catch on.

They’re 57 Classics.

I might put some Custom Buckers in that are currently residing in my Explorer
Thanks - I don't recall seeing "PAF" stickers on the 57 Classics that were in my 57RI.... just curious, that's all. They are great sounding pickups by the way (ended up in a Precision Guitar Kits Korina Vee after being replaced by Throbaks), not sure the Burstbuckers would make much of a difference but worth a go.

I put in proper 500kOhm pots (actually 537 for the neck, 525 for the bridge) over the weekend, 50s wiring, and new caps, .022 for the bridge, .015 for the neck and took the opportunity to swap the 57 Classics for the Custombuckers.
The 57 Classics are great pickups, but I do think the Custombuckers being unpotted, lower output and having uneven winds are a slight improvement, there's a bit more clarity, note separation and sparkle on top. Although wouldn't have been worth the effort if I didn't mess with the electronics anyway.
