More Communication Issues

Double Trouble

New Member
I have read several other threads on here describing FM9 Edit connection issues, but I am still having issues.

I have had my FM9 for about a month, so a relative newbie here, but it has been working fine for a long time with the current configuration.

Somehow I remember "something" vaguely about getting into the settings window on the connections window at one point, and now I am having a ton of issues getting it to connect. I may be wrong on that point, but it is worth noting.

When I start up FM9 Edit, I get a "Please wait... Communicating" message at the bottom of the screen sometimes. Other times (more commonly) it starts scanning all of the presets one at a time from 1 to 512, which takes FOREVER, and then after it completes, it is still not able to communicate correctly with the unit. Also, when it is scanning, I am unable to connect to the preferences (grayed out), and I am unable to pause communications (it is not grayed out, but it is non-functional).
  • I moved the USB cable from a USB hub to a direct port on the back of the PC (Windows 11)
  • I tried a different USB cable
  • I opened the stand alone version of Fractal-bot, and checked the connections:
    • I select "FM9" in the first box, and then it auto populates the next 2 boxes, but instead of saying "FM9" in the next two boxes, it says "4 - FM9 MIDI In" and 4 - FM9 MIDI Out". (Before moving from the USB hub it said "3-FM9 MIDI In/Out".)
  • When I can finally access the Preferences in Fm9 Edit, it has the same port names as in Fractal-bot.
  • I uninstalled and then reinstalled FM9 Edit, to no avail. I also updated the Windows USB driver.
  • I next noticed that the USB firmware in the FM9 is 1.02, and the latest rev is 1.04, so I tried installing that from Fractal-bot, but it cannot communicate with the FM9 either, so the update failed. I eventually got the update to work, and thought I had things fixed yesterday afternoon. All was well...

Then this morning comes, and back to the same issues again. I confirmed that the USB firmware in the unit is 1.04 from the front screen of the unit itself. Fractal-bot cannot connect, and FM9 Edit is back to scanning all 512 presets one at a time forever. I have rebooted the FM9 and computer several times this morning.

Any ideas would be welcomed! Thanks in advance!

Does your PC have any USB 2.0 ports instead of 3.x? If so try one of those. USB 3.x is supposed to be fully backwards compatible, but I've run into weird issues with certain USB 2.0 devices before. 3.x ports are often a different color inside (blue is common), but they also have a second row of 5 contacts on the very tip of the inner plastic tab. 2.0 ports have only the 4 curved spring contacts further inside. Do you have any other PC's you can try with? If the FM9 connects fine with another PC, it would at least point to an issue on the PC side.

Thanks for the comment, and your suggestion was right on. I installed the USB driver and FM9 Edit onto my laptop, and it works great.

Now I have to try and figure out why it is not working on my main PC... UGH! It was working fine, and it has always worked using the same cable and port with my Quad Cortex. Something has changed. Maybe a Windows 11 update that changed something, but the laptop also has the same updates, so that is just a complicated crazy mess.

Anyway, I was able to make the changes I needed to make, so in the short term, I am ok.

Thanks again!

USB is kind of like Bluetooth in that regard. When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, it's usually a royal pain in the ass.

HALLELUJAH!!! That worked! I "downgraded" my UAD Console software to version 1.2.4 and now FM9 Edit is working perfectly!

I cannot thank you enough!!! I was really frustrated!
