Midi Moose & Phantom Powah

I love my MIDI Moose, the only thing it does is switch five presets at a time. It takes a lot of planning and copying presets around for different songs, but it's really light and portable.

I want to phantom power it, and got this message from Tech21's support:

"The Moose accepts the phantom power via the two outer pins of the 5-pin connection, just like other devices accept the power via the two outer pins of their 7-pin connection. I haven't seen any 7-to-5 pin adaptors, so you either have to modify a cable by moving the connections "in" one pin from the outer position on one end (it's really only the center pin and outer pins that do anything... the rest have no function), or, see if it's possible to do it inside the Axe-FX. Then you can use a standard 5-to-5 pin MIDI cable."

Is there any hope for phantom powering the Moose with my Axe?

I dunno; you'd have to ask them how they are wired.

In either case, it's a really easy thing to do, just talk to them first to be sure it's wired how you need it.

+1
There's no standard for power over MIDI cables, so it's a very good idea to double-check and make sure you have the right pins and the right positive/negative connection. Also, double-check that you can plug the MIDI Moose's power adapter into the jack on the Axe-Fx before you get too far into it. :)

It doesn't even come with a power adapter, that's what makes it all so weird. I think it's a standard 9v one though. I'm just starting to get confused about how to phantom power the thing with the Axe. The Axe powers via pins 6 and 7 right?

Correct.
It sends to pins 6 & 7 of the MIDI In jack whatever power is received from the phantom power jack (just above MIDI In). It requires the power source plugged into that jack since the Axe otherwise has no idea what the requirements of your phantom powered device are.

I might be confusing myself as well wrt positive/negative(?).

Looks like this is the official power supply to use with it...

Check the manual... has the info you need. :)

Btw, the reason Tech 21 uses pins 1 & 3 is because normally, they go unused with MIDI...

For the Axe, pins 1 & 3 are or will be (at least, it's been stated in the past that this was the plan) used for two-way communication with the MFC floor controller.
