Marshall Model Recommendation

I saw a band last week and the guitarist had a great tone playing an SG straight into a Marshall head & cab. I asked him about the amp and he said he built (or modded) it, but he said it was similar to a 68 Plexi with a post phase inverter master volume, and a 1960B cab with greenbacks.

I don't know much about Marshall amps, I've never owned one, but I know there's lots to choose from in the AXE. So I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a model that might get close to what's described above.

Try any of the Plexi models and change the location of the Master Volume to "Post P.I.". Turn down the Master Volume a bit.

I don't know what that does, but holy crap I like that.

it lets you pummel the phase inverter with the full output the preamp/cathode follower. You'll definitely need to drop the bass to keep the amp from getting farty.

One of the wonders of Cliff's amp models is that you can actually move parts around and they act like a real amp still!
