I think my digital in (SPDIF) is broken. Anything to try?

I've tried accepting digital (SPDIF) from my mic preamp (an audient Mico) and from my MOTU Traveler mk3....both are set at 48k for the sample rate - there are LED's on each unit to show the current sample rate. As soon as I go into I/O on the Axe-Fx and switch input source from Analog Front to digital, I hear pulsing static. At the end of each pulse, I hear a tiny amount of the real audio that I'm feeding that way.

How can I diagnose if the digital in is in fact broken or not? Is there anything else I need to do besides switching the input source? My digital output from the Axe-Fx works fine. I've also listened to digital output of my Mico into my MOTU and it sounds fine. But not into the Axe....

Thank you!

the same problem here
it worked ok though a few weeks ago
maybe something with the latest update?
I will try the former firmware to check it
won't be before next week
I'll let you know

Thanks for checking sjaak!
Cliff, if you can check this easily please let me know if it's a software bug or hardware issue.

Apparently, you can't use digital in and analog out at the same time, Cliff said. As soon as I get a 2nd SPDIF cable, I'll see if this is broken or not.

hi
spdif-in works fine but only on the spdif-out
no idea why this is
on the audio-outs still very bad sound
I'm using ordinary rca cables (I believe that's the name ......we call them cinch cables)
so nothing broken here just the nature of the axe

You can't use the analog outputs when using digital in. The analog I/O is clocked off a dedicated oscillator. The oscillator connects directly to the converters with the shortest trace possible. This is key in extracting the optimum performance from a converter. As soon as you start putting an oscillator through logic circuits (i.e. to switch the clock source) you affect the performance of the converter.

The rationale behind this is that the only time you would use the digital input is for re-amping and you would be using the digital output.

Digital out for reamping? Only if you're using the cab blocks instead of real mics. I've never seen a power amp or powered monitors with digital in.

digital INPUT he said, more than likely coming from your DAW

I know (you're the one who's confused). Digital in into the Axe-Fx. When using the digital in, you can only use the digital outs reliably from the Axe-Fx, not analog outs. Hence the power amp / power cabs being useless (none of them have digital ins to hook to the digital out of the Axe-Fx.

So if one wants to use the digital ins of the Axe-Fx for re-amping, you are limited to the built-in cabs only. Can't use real mics or cabs (my complaint).

you should be able to use the analogue outs without any problems. Just make sure the digital out of the Axe-Fx is connected and used as the clock master, you can still ignore any signal from it and use the analogue signals instead, it's needed only for clock sync.

The only solution is to either feed the axe-fx input from your DAW through the analog ins, or buy an external DAC that you can feed to your poweramp.

No you can't. Analog outs cannot be used at the same time as digital in.
