Thanks for this Clark! This is exactly what I've been wondering about. I nearly sold my Axe because I couldn't get the attack right. Although I disagree that the G3 sounds longer, to me it seems smoother and a bit less exaggerated. The attack used to have what I would call a "plastic" feel (too loud compared to the rest of the signal). Very, very subtle but I couldn't seem to dial it out. Also the high end is better too now.

My only other concern is if I can find that super smooth fusion kind of alan holdsworth type tone. I haven't heard it in any of the examples so far but I have hope.

I'm extremely excited to get this one!!

i've always struggled with the HBE and the BE....something in the low miss that feels congested to me. maybe it's the ir, who knows. it's obvious a great model since every one loves it and makes great clips/recordings with it.

It could also be the guitar that you're using. I couldn't know without hearing it. However I feel like it's the best amp to check if your IRs are good or not. At least all of my IRs usually work with the HBE stock settings. If that's not plug'n'play then I don't know what is. :)

Hey Johnnyh64, for a smooth Holdsworth tone, try this excellent one uploaded a while back by Derryl Gabel. It's on FW13.02 but seems to work fine on 17.04.

I think this G3 thing is going to bring out those "mistakes" that you want because it makes the tone sound more real, more natural. It is like the conversation we have had for years about tape versus digital recordings. They sound so perfect that they don't sound as good. Those little intricate timing issues, etc. are what make a sound more human.
 
Does G3 Update Mean 2 or 3 Extra Years of Life in the Axe FXII?

FW18 is not the normal update, this seems to be Generation 3 coming soon. Does this mean that the lifespan of our Axe FXII could increase by another 2-3 years more than it was planned?
 
Given there are plenty of people still using and enjoying their Axe Ultra's I don't think there is any hard and fast "lifespan" rule, unless of course your of the modern mindset that only the latest and greatest is worth having, and last years model suddenly becomes worthless.

If in 2016 there is an Axe-FX III, your Axe II will still sound just as good as it did before the day they announced the III, though surely plenty of folks will suddenly start to hate their II's I'm sure lol
 
You can keep your Axe for 50 more years, no one forces you to up grade.

As been covered a hundred times, there is no Axe III on the horizon presently. Of course there will be a new unit eventually, assuming Cliff stays healthy.
 
The Axe FX II never had a 'planned' lifespan, there's no way to gauge that. The Axe FX III will no doubt be in development when Cliff reaches the limitations of the Axe FX II hardware.

Which firmware you're on is irrelevant. If you get great sounds out of your own unit, then you will continue to use it for years to come.
 
From what I've heard of FW18 and based on how great my XL sounds at the moment I don't see why I wouldn't have this baby for a decade.
