Forum compatibility with IE 11

Rex

Dignified but Approachable
I'm having apparent compatibility issues between the forum software and Internet Explorer 11, and I wonder who else is experiencing this.

The issue is a strange one. Sometimes everything behaves normally. Other times, when I'm entering text in a post, some characters get missed unless I type extremely slowly and deliberately. Some keys get missed more than others. When it's acting up, IE becomes almost unusable on the forum. The issue began for me on two machines (Win 7 and Win 8 ). On each machine, it started when I upgraded to IE 11.

No, it's not sloppy typing. The problem is specific to this forum and IE 11. I've found others on the web who describe a similar problem when running IE 11 on a vBulletin 4.2.1 forum. Apparently v4.2.2 fixes the issue.

Who else has experienced this problem? And are there any plans to update the forum software?

(ducks in anticipation of the inevitable "Don't use Internet Explorer" flames..) :)

Make sure IE is not running in Compatibility Mode, as that can cause issues. Conversely, turning on Compatibility Mode can fix site-specific issues. Also, the F12 developer tools allow you to emulate earlier versions of IE, so try that and see if your issues persist.

BTW, as a web developer, Internet Explorer is the bane of my effing existence.

I've forced compatibility mode for the forum. We'll see what happens. (IE forced me to make all of fractalaudio.com use Compatibility View; it won't recognize forum.fractalaudio.com.)

IE, like much Microsoft software, is the ban of many people, but big enough that, as you know, you usually have to accommodate it. :(

So far, F12 emulation appears to be working. I'm using the agent string for IE 10, which is, coincidentally, the issue that was addressed in vBulletin 4.4.2. So far, so good. We'll see what happens. It's kludgy, but it appears to be working so far.

Thank you Rex for putting up that question. I had the same problems (Win7 and Win8.1) but didn't know where to start to fix it.

Unfortunately, F12 emulation doesn't persist across sessions, or even across tabs. You have to set it every time you open a new window into the forum. It's more of a work-around than a fix, though I'm grateful to Ben for suggesting it. I think the only real fix will be an update to vBulletin.

Warning:If you're going to switch to emulation mode, make sure you do it before you start typing. Otherwise, it'll throw away everything you've typed so far.

I got tired of IE working properly only 1/2 the time, then microsoft will update stuff and break it more instead of fixing it. Got to the point where I couldn't even do my online banking anymore so I switched to google chrome about 2 years ago.

I know you don't want to hear it, but IE is a headache and I recommend you move to Chrome.

I am a computer network specialist, and I use IE, Chrome and Firefox. Whichever tool does the job. I use Chrome mostly, but I have seen IE not work for some important web sites for clients, but either of the others work fine. Just an observation, not an endorsement of any of the browsers. Whatever works, that is what I use.
