FM9 system noise

Hi! Wanting to find out about the system noise on your units. Guitar plugged in, volume off or guitar unplugged... I hear a high pitch constant, digital noise... stays same level when output volume is up or down. It annoys me. You guys experience this? Almost like a spinning fan. Forum not allowing me to link the noise.

I'm not able to play that.

If your guitar cable is not plugged in at all (not sure if that's what you mean by "guitar unplugged"?) do you still hear it?

What about if you unplug the USB cable?

Definitely not normal. Fractal devices are very low noise. Sounds like you're picking up some kind of interference.

Do you have the unit near any other devices? Does the noise change if you move the device to a new location?

How are you monitoring the FM9 and how did you record that noise clip?

Unplugged guitar cable would make more of a deeper hum/buzz sound, and if a cable goes bad sometimes it does the same, but that whiney noise definitely sounds like maybe USB if it's connected to something or interference of some sort.

Noise is there whether guitar is plugged in or not.

I unplugged the usb. Still persists.

thanks for the reply.

I hear it in my headphones, through any speaker I plug into. (This case Jbl powered monitor). It occurs in all locations.

Does the level of the noise change when you turn the front panel OUT 1 knob up or down?
I haven’t tried the xlr outs yet. Just the jacks. They all have the same noise. The system noise level doesn’t change when the knobs are turned. And the noise is consistent through all presets

Do you have the FM9 plugged into a properly grounded outlet?

If the noise level doesn't change when you turn the front panel OUT knobs, then it's likely something post D/A converter in the analog output section.

I'd wager if it was external interference, the more sensitive input section would be picking it up more and running through the preset. Do you hear any normal guitar signal or effects through the unit along with the noise? If so, how loud is the noise relative to the guitar signal?

Has it always made that noise, or did it work normally and then just start doing that? I don't think it will make a difference, but you could always try and reset the system parameters from the Setup > Utilities menu in case it's some kind of weird issue there.

If it was noise coming in through the input, it would be loud enough to keep the gate open, and it would respond to changes in the front panel OUT knobs.

@Brucefoh just to be clear, can you still hear the noise via headphones or your speakers with the front panel OUT knobs turned all the way down?

To be clear you still didn't answer my question ;)

I want to know if the guitar cable is plugged in to the unit regardless of whether a guitar is attached to the other end.

Because a guitar cable can act as an antenna for noise.
Thanks man. Yes it was there still with guitar cable in or out. That’s good thinking.

I'm having the same thing on my FM9 MKII Turbo. A continuous, high-frequency whistling sound is heard between the screen and the power socket. My FM9 is near some monitors (Yamaha HS7) and my iMac. It's present even when the speakers are turned off.

Yes I can still hear the noise with the knobs turned all the way down. But I'm thinking its related to my mono jacks. I plugged in a different pair of headphones and its completely silent and clean... I think the problem was the mono jacks I'm using to the speaker and the mono converter to my headphones.
