FM9 Firmware Version 3.00

See - that is what I was thinking. And according to the below from the wiki, FM9 has twice the power than the FM3. So isn’t reasonable to think that there IS room to allocate a bit more storage to presets in the FM9 than the FM3?

"The III uses (1) dual-core Texas Instruments DSP. The FM3 uses (1) dual-core Analog Devices DSP. The FM9 uses (2) dual-core Analog Devices DSPs. The TI DSPs are much more powerful than the Analog Devices DSPs per clock and run at around twice the clock speed as well. So one TI DSP core is about four times more powerful than one Analog Devices DSP core. If we normalize processing power to the III it would be:
  • Axe-Fx III: 100%
  • FM9: 50%
  • FM3: 25%
As I wrote in my previous reply:
Processing power and storage capacity are 2 different things.

The DSP is processing power only, NOT storage memory

So what we are talking about is “non-volatile memory” correct?

So when I read things like the FM9 press release below, it makes me think the non-volatile memory in the FM9 is similar to the AxeIII, so therefore, it seems logical that there IS the ability to have more than 512 presets in the FM9, but cliff just chose not to for some reason:

The FM9 also includes the entire Ultra-ResTM cab collection from the Axe-Fx III, with 2,200+ “Factory” cabs including selections from the today’s best producers, plus 1,024 “User” locations for loading your own Impulse Responses (“IRs”).
Your stubbornness seems to be "Fireproof" 😅

The fact they have the same amount of factory cabs doesn't mean they have the same amount of memory. Actually the FM9 has half the user IR slots than the axe fx mkI, and the mkI has 512 presets as well.

If you really wanna find out you can take a look inside your fm9 and try to identify the memory chip and its size, and ask someone with and axe fx to do the same to compare them.

PS: I don't think Cliff would leave a good chunk of memory unused just to differentiate devices, if it has 512 presets it's because there's no room for more

As I wrote in my previous reply:

Well this is a quote from you:
The “GOOD” reason is that your storage capacity calculation is based on the difference in DSP power between the different units.

Processing power and storage capacity are 2 different things.

Your first statement literally said “storage capacity is BASED ON the difference in DSP power…”

But I think we both know that storage capacity is different than processing power. As I said in a later post, we are all in agreement that we are talking about non-volatile, storage memory.

All I’m suggesting is that if you look at Fractal’s product comparison table, in the absence of KNOWING exactly how much storage memory each device has, and based on the difference between the 3 units, it could be possible that there is more memory in the FM9 than the FM3. And in many cases it seems like the FM9 Is either in-between FM3 and Axe, or closer to the Axe...

For example:
……………FM3 >> FM9 >> AXE
  • reverb blocks: 1 >> 2 >> 2
  • cab blocks: 1 block >> 2 blocks >> 2 blocks+
  • drive blocks: 2 >> 3 >> 4
  • grid size: 12x4 >> 14x6 >> 14x6
  • USB: 4x4 >> 8x8 >> 8x8
  • footswitches: 3 >> 9 >> none
  • presets: 512 >> 512 >> 1024

- presets (proposed) 512 >> 768 >> 1024

I KNOW not all of the above has to do with storage memory. But looking at the product portfolio - there’s a general progression of capabilities from FM3 to FM9 to Axe.

So IF there is storage memory closer to the Axe than the FM3, I think it would FIT NICELY within that progression of capabilities, and may be one more thing to persuade potential buyers to go with the more expensive FM9 vs. the FM3. (Not that that matters much right now since they are selling all they can produce).

Anyway - It’s now clear NOBODY knows the exact storage memory in the 3 devices. Just the DSP / chips used. And we can’t infer storage memory from that.

So I’ll drop it.

There was a reason I wrote “GOOD” ….guess this did not trigger your sarcasm detector 😆. I tried to be polite and not say directly that your reasoning is wrong. Reading my message again I understand your interpretation, my bad.

GOOD!

all waiting patiently for the 4.0 bèta?
I think we need to see the full release for Axe3 hopefully maybe we will get Beta this Friday
Axe3 is/was very close but then there was an issue possibly w the Dizzy models so FAS had to go back through them
