EV-1 squealing

One of my EV-1 pedals make a very loud squeal when I work it. Is it safe to lubricate the travel arm that goes down into the pedal, or should I take it apart and lube it inside?

That "travel arm" is part of the rack-and-pinion mechanism that turns the pot. It and the gear it mates with are made of some kind of Delrin- or Teflon-like plastic. They're essential self-lubricating, so they're not likely to cause a squeal. It would be good to check out where on the pedal the squeal is actually coming from.

Meanwhile, have you tried adjusting the tension on the pedal?

I'm pretty sure my EV-2s all came with white lithium grease on the rack... I assume the EV-1 would be the same?

Maybe. I never noticed any grease on mine, but then it's spent years doing battle with cat fur. Still not a likely squeal point. But maybe I don't understand what @guitarjim means by "squeal."

Yeah, sqeal would most likely be from the treadle "axle" I think, so your idea on the tension is a good one.
