Elis 8 stereo speakers for live.

Hi all, first post in the forum.

I've had these for a while and just wondering about people's experiences?

There seems to be a midrange (about 1k) that is present on most if not all patches, including factory presets. I mean the obvious answer is to dial this out using PEQ or GEQ but I just want to know what others think. I don't really have a problem otherwise it's just this certain frequency.

Regards
Stevie

I found them to be a bit darker than some other solutions (Blueamps Cubo, Fender FR-10, EV PXM-12MP).

There are some obvious benefits to the Fender and EVs, mainly the EQ and Line Out.

Yeah I guess I was looking for something more flat. I'm stuck with them for the moment so not really looking to sell. I don't think they are dark it's just that frequency.

As a global 'fix', you could do a notch in Output 1 (PEQ) to taste so all your amps dial more naturlly for you. Out 2 same if it goes to FOH.

So I experimented with these speakers again, I notched out the 1k and I have also been playing with the bass, quite low. It makes a difference at home but I don't know how this will all sound tomorrow at rehearsal.

Time will tell. At least it is rehearsal and I can use the front screen.

At what volume are you playing at home? I notice the frequency response from the Elis8 (and other FRFRs) vary a lot depending on how loud you are playing. Probably because of the Fletcher Munson effect. I use different presets at home with low volume and live, and find i have to lower the mids and raise the treble when playing at a lower volume. Maybe that 1k frequency you are hearing is caused by presets that are meant for louder volumes?

Quite loud at rehearsal but at home not so much - I wish I had my own studio to really work on this.

Room placement also has a huge effect. It always does, with any speaker enclosure. But these are so small, it's very easy to put them in less-than-optimal locations. Mine sound anywhere from stellar to boring to honky, depending both on output volume and room characteristics.

So my sound woofy, and I am really trying to figure out what to do. I need to experiment with the Volume setting on the back of the unit, try it at say 5 w my FM9 cranlked and then try it at 10 w my M9 turned down a bit. But it doesn't sound anything like my Yamaha HS8s in my studio which is where I do a lot of sound shaping. Then from there I am going to have to work on a global EQ OUT situation. Not even sure where to begin on that LOL. I have 4 weeks before I start gigging with them and haven't been happy at rehearsals yet, so I gotta get on it.....

I did do a cut at 120hz, a small cut at 250k and a hi cut at 6400 for now and it seems to be ok. Plus any amp models I am using I bring down the mids to like 4. As the speakers are quite mid forward

Are you happy at home with them?
Do you play at near band volume there?
So much depends on volume...

No not really. I feel like they're wonky at home levels as well as rehearsal levels. I have the volume on the MF10 at 5. Gone try and crank it open and lower my FM9 OUT. I bought these cool lil XLR Splitter so I can A/B from my studio Yamaha HS8s to the FM9s instantaneously to really figure out what frequency is pissin' me off....

Not to complicate your life, especially with not a ton of time before your gigs, but I bet 8" consumer grade studio monitors aren't a great guide for life at gig volume, unless you're doing a jazz combo or something.

That may not be the point though. If you've got monitors you want to use, try to get your presets sounding good through them at volume, see how it goes. If you have recordings of the rest of the band you can play along with, even better.

Let your HS8s be a different world, at least for now.

Ya I got my Marshalls cabs and HS8s dialed, but not the RedSound. Sitting down to tweak in the next hour

so...... kinda embarrassed.... I did a lot of drugs in the 80s, so there's that......... I did NOT have my global EQ on for the OUT 1. U roll off under 70hz and above 12k hz and bubbam! Stupid me............

I have a set of Elis8s as well - wondering if break-in time is needed here, although I experience the same slightly darker sound when compared to my main studio monitors, which are Focal Twin Be6 (which are quite bright! lol). I haven't really used the Elis8s that much since I bought them, but getting ready to put them to use...
