Control effect bypass state with external switch AND midi

Seems like this should be doable but maybe not?

Here's what I'm trying to do, I'll be specific but should apply to a general case. I'm using Scenes mode and have a preset as follows AMP > CHO > DLY > RVB. I have the Chorus assigned to an external switch (via the Chorus Bypass modifier) so I can bring it in or out at any time in any scene - this works as expected. I'd also like to control the chorus via MIDI (for automation purposes). My first thought was that I could assign MIDI control to the switch but that doesn't appear to be possible. But you can assign MIDI to control the FX Bypass of any block. So in this case I can assign a MIDI CC# to FX2 Bypass - it's not a toggle so I have to use one MIDI message with value 0 to turn off the block and a second message with value 127 (maybe it's any non-zero value?) to turn it on. This also works fine, BUT ONLY IF I remove the switch modifier, i.e., I can have manual control via the switch OR MIDI control but not both. The manual does reference that you can't change a setting if it has a modifier so I guess that's what's happening here - I thought bypass state might not be included.

So either I'm missing a way to do what I would like here or I can think of two other (much less than ideal) solutions:
1. Use a midi control switch (more expense and complexity)
2. Add a second preset exactly like the first but with the Chorus always on. Then for the MIDI automation case I jump to the 2nd preset (and select the correct scene) when I want to hit my Chorus pedal.

Thanks for any ideas/confirmation of my current understanding!

I believe you can accomplish what you want by assigning the modifier to the External 1 controller, and then you can assign a CC# to that External 1 via the Global Remote screen, and use it wherever you want, both in Midi and as a Switch controller. But even withthat you will be assigning 2 midi commands to the On/Off states when going midi. (0 and 127) - My Midi toggle switch does it. I am using an Ampero Control Midi foot controller, and it really expands the capability of the AM4. But we also needs them to add "ignore Scene" to the effects like the bigger units.

How do you have the Ampere connected...USB or the 1/8" mini jacks?
I just ordered one for my AM4.
Thanks, in advance !
