Legacy Closest I think I'll ever get to the fear factory tone - NO TONE MATCH

Now lets be honest if I want to record songs that sound exactly like fear factory, tone matching is the way to go. But as everyone knows, it really sucks a lot out of the tone. So this is the closest I could come. I'm NOT playing a fear factory song because I've found that if you play almost any patch with the right amount of articulation it shades the way a song sounds into the tone. So here is a very generic fear factory style riff.

If someone has gotten closer I'd like to know. I probably have a hundred hours in this patch. I obsessed about it for a very very very long time.

I like it! Would it be possible for you to share your patch? If you could share your tweaking experience, that'd be sooo sweet! (I'm amidst a tone seeking experience and I find learning how others think about it is extremely helpful).

Anywayz, cool tone! Congrats!

Holy buckets! What a difference between the Axe-fx II and post processing. What exactly are you doing post-recording? Wouldn't it be easier to start a little closer to your end goal?

I think that there's almost too much low-cut going on, and just a hair too much presence. What amp are you using? I would think that the best way to get that over-the-top sound would be to sit down with either the FAS Modern or Das Metall and go to town. There's also a patch somewhere on here that features two FAS Modern amps and as I recall, was bust-your-nuts heavy.

I totally agree with Shotgunn about the first clip sounding better. In fact, I'm amazed at how Fear Factory-esque it sounds. I love Fear Factory and you nailed that Demanufacture tone.

It is amusing that we're cloning Fear Factory tones with an Axe-FX II though. (not that I'm complaining! In fact I'm dying for your patch!) Dino Cazares often uses Line 6 for his tones. I think he's currently using the Pod HD Pro... at least when on tour.

Well, for Demanufactured Dino used a José Arrendondo modded JCM-800.

I'm kind of disappointed that the JCM-800 Mod amp is gone. Although, I'm still on FW 6.01.

Im not familiar with Fear Factory so I can't comment on the original sound, but if you want to "record songs that sound exactly like them" I think maybe yer focus should be more on the mixing stage of the chain. The "post processed" version has just about all traces of life sucked out of it. There's more meat in the cymbals than the guitars!

I originally thought I wanted exactly his tone, but then decided against it. The other clips I've posted I am creating "my own tone." I honestly think this is as close as is possible. I started this tone in February of 2012. I would recommend users using the pre tone match FW to upgrade. There was a LARGE upgrade in sound quality and it was worth replaying with my settings.

I will say from this experience I learned that the unit does very accurately represent a lot of the things that people use to get their tone, so if you want Xs tone, look up in depth their equipment and start with that and go from there. I didn't use the 800MOD preset, even though you'd think that'd be the way to go. But remember that the 800MOD is not based on the same mod that Dino used. So really in my opinion to accurately do these patches you need to have a good understanding of the hardware involved.

As for the comment about the presence, believe it or not the REAL in person tone is actually way more harsh

Here it is, you can not find any more real of a representation of his tone than this. Listening to the album again and the tone I think I can jack up the treble\presence a little more to be honest to really get it right.

Reference for those that have not heard fear factory before. I will likely post another clip in a week or two with a 100% nailed tone, with no tone matching. It will be the culmination of the original reason I bought the AXE, to replicate timeless, classic tones, for me to hold onto and be able to record at 1AM!

Oh yeah, Cazares' tone is like frying a steak with an acetylene torch (in a really good way) but I'm still telling you, the 2nd clip has a bit too much high end... and not enough low end.

It's getting pretty closes, but it's not quite there.

I was of the impression that Dino was using an Axe-fx II now though... maybe not?

No, there's even a press release of him bashing it as too hard to use.

Wow. Well, there is a pretty sizable learning curve, I guess. If I were a dude that was touring, writing, and performing all the time I'd be a little hesitant to just switch over if I didn't have a tech to work with me on stuff like this. I guess I just take for granted the last year that I've spent with the unit. Hmm...

The craziest thing to me is when he had his amp stolen he never replicated the old amp. I would think with even a fairly small amount of work and trail and error he could have gotten his tone back. Dino, if you want your tone on an AXE-FX I'll give you this patch if you trade it for some riffs ;)

My favourite metal tone ever, check the search cause there has been a few huge threads on getting his tone

Speaking of tone matching, shotgunn etc, do you prefer using ozone vs the axe fx tone match?
