Bass - Middle - Treble on the fly

I've been on rock climbing forums where people make obscure specialty gear that is not commercially viable, but very useful to the community of interest. People post up on a discussion thread and commit to buying a unit, and when a threshold is reached, the creator runs a batch of the hardware machining or whatever they need to do, and then sells the units from that limited run to the people who committed to buy it. Getting prepaid is a bit more tricky, but removes the element of trusting strangers to follow through with a purchase. Maybe a non-refundable deposit system would be a reasonable compromise?
