AXE FX II ---> AES = sounds horrible

Help. I tried reaching out on Gearslutz but received very little response. Thought I'd try here. I connected my AXE FX II to my Avid HD I/O via AES. I set the AXE output to AES in the system menu. When I pull up the Pro Tools track to record the sound has a "metallic ringing" quality that makes it unusable. It just sounds horrible. Anyone here use this setup? Does the AXE need to be clocked? I have to use this input as I've maxed out all my analog ones. Any advise would be appreciated. I'm a newbie to the AXE.... :|

You could use the Sample Rate Converter of the HD I/O if you have a digital I/O card. AFAIK it's not available for the chassis AES/EBU...
Or of course a 48k session.
Or use the analog I/O...
