Another use for Tone Matching...

So I had an idea. I currently use Slate Digital's Virtual Console Collection in my DAW to smooth out all my tracks and give them that analogue feel. I thought why not try and use the TM function in the AxeFX to capture the EQ characteristics of the plugin thus the various consoles that it replicates.

This method could be used to capture any outboard gear I suspect, so here is what I did.

Blank preset apart from a synth block and TM block.
Set the synth to play continuous pink noise with the TM block bypassed.
Record the pink noise into my DAW via USB to a mono track.
Take a local snapshot until the graph settles down using just the pink noise.
Set the input of the TM block to USB and Left only input.
Back in the DAW I then added the Slate VCC Plugin to the channel and select the desired console (Neve, SSL etc..)
I then played the pink noise + Plugin back to the Axe via USB and to the reference sample.
Click the match button and we're cooking with gas!

The changes in tone were subtle but significant, it added a 3d feel to the tone, a little punch in the lows and smoothed off the highs. I'll post a clip and my first patch a little later.

Cheers

Spence

intriguing. please post an A/B comparison of a patch with and without when you get the chance!

Here is the link to a Flac clip, I'm not sure the differences would be noticeable on mp3, maybe it would. The clips repeats 4 times, first is without VCC, second is with and it repeats twice. For me it's feels nicer to play the one with VCC, the low-end feels a little cleaner. Happy to share the patch if someone thinks it might be useful. The model was Brit4k with is modelled after an SSL E-Series console.
