AM4 VP4 recording into DAW issue

So on the AM4 you're hearing stereo in the headphones but not in the main outputs? That sounds like a cable or connection issue.

If you want the VP4 to be after the AM4 in series, use the VP4 as your output device. Skip the analog connection back to the AM4 completely and just use the output of the VP4 to your interface. For recording via USB, use the USB out of the VP4. The AM4's signal flows through the VP4 so you'll be able to hear and record both.

In both headphones and main outs on the AM4, I am hearing: (stereo AM4 but MONO VP4). This is despite connecting as depicted. I can hear the VP4 in the AM4 headphones and main outs, but the VP4 is not in stereo, even though I hear the AM4 in stereo as expected. This should not be happening unless I have something wrong in the cabling and/or settings.

I have also experimented with 4CM using VP4 as guitar input and mains output (sure wish it had a headphone jack!), attempting to insert AM4 into a 4CM block in the VP4. I thought I had that going, but it also did not work as expected. I am going back to that once more to see if I did something wrong.

This is what I really want to do with the VP4 4CM approach, and it seems possible but I still have not been able to get it working.
VP4 4CM Insert possibilities (example):
(VP4) [PIT] {AM4,4CM} [MTD] [CHR] [REV]
(VP4) [PIT] [MTD] {AM4,4CM} [CHR] [DLY]
(VP4) [PIT] {[MTD] [CHR] {AM4,4CM} [REV]

Nevermind, if you're hearing the AM4 in stereo, that means the stereo signal has to be going through the VP4, because the insert loop breaks the analog connection to the output. Do you have a stereo effect active in the VP4, like ping pong delay or something?

4CM in the VP4 is mono only. You can move the location of the loop, but it will still be limited to mono only. 4CM via SPDIF is also not an option with the VP4.

Yep, thanks. I just re-read the VP4 manual. Only mono is available. I guess there was never any thought or plan to allow inserting the AM4 in between VP4 blocks and maintain full stereo if desired. Seems I'm not alone in wishing PITCH block was available in AM4, but I can see why they did not do so. The problem is the desired effects like PITCH and MTD can only come before or after the AM4, so with PITCH being better PRE and MTD being amazing POST, you're out of luck! On to the next config!

I wish I had it cabled wrong...I'm willing to learn! Guitar into AM instrument, SPDIF out from AM4 to SPDIF IN on VP4. Stereo (SPDIF) from AM to VP, TS L/R from VP Outputs to TRS RETURN on AM. Headphones are working as expected with AM4, but VP4 is only coming through one side of the stereo field, or possibly summing to one side? The output jacks on the AM are going to my Apollo X6 3/4 inputs, and that signal is pretty weak (investigating that issue separately, but the same signal issue is present with output jacks. The problem, as you’ve concluded is that you’re using a standard insert cable which works for the spdif path, however, the manual for 4cm return:

Just run the VP4 after the AM4. Some Racks back in the 80’s had all the effects after the Amp and before the cabs. Try it out and see how it sounds to you. You might be thinking in the mindset of a modern pedal board/amp set up. I have run my AM4 (4 effect blocks, no amp block) in front of my Soldano SLO100R and from the SLO line out into the VP4 stereo out to separate power amp and cabs. The SLO cab only had effects from AM4. I didn’t even use the SLO effects loop.

I think the lesson here is if you need that many blocks and more flexibility, get an FM3 or FM9 instead of the AM4 and VP4.
Good point. I was not thinking I needed the VP4, but their PITCH block sounds great. And the additional Fractal FX blocks that are not in the AM4 are also excellent. Did not really think it would be so difficult to combine the two! I'm still happy to have both and I will make it work for me.

I saw that, but it was not labeled that way in the setup diagram in this thread by the OP, so I thought I had found "the way", lol. That cable will effectively sum the L/R, which should be OK for what I want. Will try it since I happen to have one of those!

Yes, back in the 80's I put everything before the amp! I couldn't really afford the rack stuff, so it was all pedals!
