1st time Axe FX owner

Hello everyone. Finally got an FX. Not for any other reason other than I didn't believe in it. Older guy and owned several amps and heads but they get heavy. Checked out a friends Ultra and was blown away. I love 5150s and the 5105 setting after some setup was really good. So since I will really only use this for live I bought the Standard. That will be totally fine for me. But I do have a problem. Since I bought used I want to restore it back like it was released from the factory because everything is jacked up now. Then I want to load 11.0, it has 10.3 now. What do I need to get to hook this up to my cpu and how easy is it to restore to factory for an average cpu user? It is easy for most to talk over my head when it comes to the tech side of this stuff. Thanks!!

You need to get a midi interface for your pc, I have the Cakewalk UM-2G and it works really well.
There's a list of interfaces here: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/axe-e...29-interfaces-working-not-working-axe-fx.html

You need to install Axe-Edit.

and download the preset banks: Fractal Audio Systems Support - Axe-Fx Latest Firmware, Manuals, Downloads, Axe-Edit Software, and more

When you have axe-edit and midi up and running you can save the banks to the Axe in Axe edit.

Hope this helps a bit.

Be careful with that list. I got this one: EMU XMidi 1x1 on PC & Mac because it was cheap. I only needed an interface for the AxeFx. Turns out, it won't let me update the firmware.

You can also download banks using Midi Ox on a PC or SysEx Librarian on a Mac. See the Fractal support page for links.

You can score MIDISport 2x2's on e-Bay for $40 all day long. I got one of the old ugly yellow ones about 6 years ago and it's never failed me with anything including the AxeFX which can be kind of picky about which interface you use. It's actually not the AxeFX, it's probably the way that manufacturers skimp on their hardware and don't think that people will be using long transfers via MIDI and they tend to choke on them.

First thing to do is reset the Axe Fx. Press the Utility button, page right to the Reset page, and press Enter to reset parameters to factory settings. From the manual: To reset all the factory parameter in your Axe-Fx select this page and press ENTER. This will reset the Global parameters, the MIDI configuration, Continuous Controller setup and Pedal configuration. This will not clear or otherwise alter any preset information.

I had bought the Midisport 2x2 earlier today. Looks like I made a good choice. I thought all I would need is the USB cable and a 5 pin midi cable which I have but a friend says you need midi for in and out. I have 2 more midi cables but they are 7 pin. I thought the usb would be handling one of them though. I downloaded the axe edit and when I hook up the midi the top left corner of the Axe edit says "Status: Not connected: < - check MIDI I / O". I knew there was a reason I liked amps lol.

Yes, you do need both MIDI in and out. Witthout both, it won't fly. There is no USB on the Axe-FX Standard or Ultra.

The MIDIsport 2x2 was indeed an excellent choice! One more 5-pin MIDI cable and you're in business.

I hated to see this! Mine is supposed to arrive Monday and I only bought it for the upgrade.

Well I got another 5 pin MIDI cable yesterday but storms wiped out our electric until 8:30 this morning so I will be hooking all this up tonight to return my FX back to the original factory presets then upgrading to firmware 11.0 but I have some questions. When I plug the MIDI sport 2x2 in and out and the in and out on the FX and plug the usb up, then open up the Axe edit page and click download will it talk to each other or do I need to do anything else? Are there any gotchas I need to look out for.

And one other thing. I tested on a friends Ultra and was told (not by him) that the ultra and standard shared the same presets so why can't I find the PVH5105 5150 amp sim on my standard?

The 5150 sim was added in firmware 7.00. If you're on any version prior, it won't be there.
Firmware history - Fractal Audio Systems Wiki

You can check your current firmware version by pressing the Utility button, and Paging all the way to the right, the Firmware page.

Also, congrats on the Axe! :)

Thanks but I thought I saw something like 10.3 on there. Does that sound right and I still couldn't find it but I will recheck tonight. Can it be renamed by the user? I didn't think it could.

I use an EMU XMidi 1x1 with my Ultra and it works fine. Upgrading firmware and Axe-Edit work...

Make sure you install the drivers for the midi sport to your computer. You can find them on the manufacturer's website. I bought my gear used and couldn't get the midi connection working until I did that.

I did do that I think lol. I went to m-audios website and entered my interface and operating system and it displayed 2 downloads. A driver and a firmware. I downloaded the driver and when I tried to download the firmware it only gave me the option of uninstall so I am guessing the driver installed everything.

Ok I got it up and running and downloaded banks a and b to reset back to factory and downloaded 11.0 but I need to know how to put 11.0 in the Axe edit library. I know probably easy for you guys but I am new to this this and about ready to throw it in the trash lol!
