AX8 high gain guys. What's your favorite clean preset or amp?

Shiver Clean is a great clean amp! For what you are describing (raunch) I love the wrecker amps or comet concourse. I use a light amount of gain on those and dial the input trim back a little. Split coils and the use the volume knob to clean it up, roll on the volume to add grit.

Sorting out the high end?

Same here! I put a parametric EQ in the first block of all my presets to help with some of the invasive frequencies my setup seems to like to emphasize. My Mesa Combo gets shrill quick when you turn up the gain and post-EQ'ing it out was always a challenge. PEQ was the cure!

Looking to upgrade to an AX-8 (or Helix) and build a rig around it. Where to start?

AX8 into a Friedman ASM-12. Its easy to develop ADD when you first get a modeler. You could find yourself messing with presets more than actually playing. Factor that into your decision.
