Gift of Tone 2023 FINAL - Neal Schon!

So I just saw Toto and Journey in Baltimore last Sunday and was super excited to hear this live. Have to say, I was a bit let down. I feel like Neal has sounded better in the past. Tonally he sounded good but he lacked articulation and overall the mix sounded way too wet. I'm not sure how much...

FAS Class-A is...Even Better than the Real Thing

Agreed, yek's amp guide is a fabulous resource. Where I would say there is a gap is the comprehensiveness of the manuals. There are a lot of parameters that either are not explained in the manuals or are given very cursory treatment. What I've found is that most likely, the best explanation for...

    Input Clipping Thread

First I'll say that I very much appreciate the addition of this input clip warning. I've noticed it before on an ultra clean 80's studio-style preset, but couldn't figure out what was going on because nothing appeared to be clipping. That said, this enhancement has made it clear that very...

This is what I tell them.

The biggest risk to tube amps continuing as anything other than a niche product is that we're approaching a point where every player will experience a modeler first, so it will be the exact opposite of the situation Burgs is describing. These are people who will have never experienced anything...

Time spent playing guitar vs time spent learning/tweaking AXEFX

Is this the right question? Or is it how much time do I spend watching people on YouTube tweak patches vs actually playing? :D But really I find that the tweaking presets thing ebbs and flows. I did spend a lot of time learning, even though I had an Axe-Fx 2 for years. Massive shout out to Leon...

Master Kitchen Sink - best 4 options - versatility. GO!

I'll just add that at the same settings, I prefer the Studio FF over FB compressor. Try this on a very clean tone and you should hear a noticeable difference on the attack. No right answer, I just see the FB used much more often than the FF.

    Questions for HH players

Have always felt that the primary purpose of the bridge humbucker is to cut for rhythm playing, so I'd say tone on 10 all the time. What i find more often to be the issue with HH guitars is that the neck pickup is way to wooly sounding, so if you dial in the tone to work with the bridge pickup...

Axe Fx II vs Axe Fx III

With the II I felt like it was much harder to get sounds I liked. As many others have mentioned, the III sounds so much better with so little effort. But even if you were totally happy with the tone out of the II, the effects on the II are just another level. The effects are what got me to pull...

Delay Diffusion and Diffusion Time %

Hoping that someone could give a bit of an explanation about what the Diffusion and Diffusion Time % settings do in the delay block? Specifically, how do these settings interact and what is the Time % a percentage of? With the Time % at the default 50%, the effect of changing the diffusion...

Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 20.04 Public Beta (Beta 1)

When I tried recreating the Halo (and admittedly I didn't get anywhere close), I initially figured the MTD block was the way to go but quickly realized that there was no way to do cross feedback in the existing block. So even if this has nothing to do with the Halo, that functionality was...

    Keeley Halo

Got it, makes sense. Thanks again for the explanation. In a typical delay block, I like to roll off a bit more low end from the repeats. In this case, would that cause the reverb-like effect to be lessened? EDIT: Wow! Didn’t see that @Robert Keeley had commented when I made this post. Best...

    Keeley Halo

First, thank you and everyone else here for your incredibly helpful posts. This has been very educational. Re-reading this today after giving everything a second read so I could absorb it. This caught my eye. We know the pedal has a high pass filter and you mention a bass boost. What about...

    Keeley Halo

I see this now, very odd to me. There are several examples in this thread where parameters either have no effect or don't have the implied effect. I've always taken it on faith that if the parameter is there in Axe-Edit, it does what it says. If the phase offset has no effect in mono delays and...

    Keeley Halo

Assuming the Memory Man presets are accurate, that would introduce a completely different EQ curve to the repeats. Not saying either one is right, but I suspect you'd get a different character than the Halo. FWIW, I think the EQ you used sounds better. One of the things I tried was two mono...

    Keeley Halo

I think the issue here is that the Dual Delay is defining one delay time as either the L or R channel. The cross feedback ends up feeding back into the dotted 1/8th, which isn't what happens in the real pedal (or the old Memory Man setup). There was "too much" going on there, which is I think...

    Keeley Halo

So first I have to say these are amazingly good, way better than what I came up with. Have a couple questions/comments if you don't mind indulging me. Just re-watched the Keeley video and he says that the modulation cross fades between the two channels. Is that what's happening in your blocks...

    Keeley Halo

Really looking forward to checking these blocks out, thanks! I knew that what I came up with using Dual Delay and cross feedback was “wrong” but it sounded a lot better than anything else I could come up with. The modulation was clearly not right and that’s what I kept playing with. I even tried...

New AT Keeley Halo Delay Pedal

My take on this if anyone is interested. Tried coming at the delay a number of different ways that seemed more similar to his real rig and as @AlbertA says, finally settled on the Dual Delay block. Felt that using the cross feedback in that block was key to getting close. Quad Series I tried...

This was my guess. He's talking about pinch harmonics and sustain. Sounds to me like his Prophesy patch has a lot of compression.

My 2 Cents: Why Some People think Axe-Fx Doesn't Sound Great

I personally have never owned a tube amp and have never experienced something pushing a lot of air in a room, so I guess I never got it in my head that it was what a guitar is "supposed" to sound like. I always wanted it to sound like the albums I liked, which at the time I had zero...

My 2 Cents: Why Some People think Axe-Fx Doesn't Sound Great

One thing I've always found funny is that you see endless threads about how modelers sound "like shit" compared to an amp in the room but you rarely if ever see someone saying the opposite, that they love modelers because they sound like a recorded guitar tone and NOT an amp in the room.

Would love to see an FAS version of the Line 6 Litigator, which is one of the custom models in the Helix ecosystem. Sort of an idealized D-style amp.

    Front panel poll

I realize this is anecdotal, but a significant percentage of users don't find moving between the front panel and Axe-Edit to be intuitive, based on comments made in this thread and elsewhere. It also used to be completely normal to operate your TV by walking across the room and pressing buttons...

    Front panel poll

It seems odd to me how common the answer to "I don't like the UI" is a defensive post about just spending more time to learn it. I feel like a more relevant question is can you go back and forth between the two interfaces intuitively? The answer to that seems to a pretty clear no. But that...

Axe FX 2 --> Axe FX 3 Upgrader Person

I resisted moving to the 3 for a long time. I wasn't maxing out CPU on the 2 and wasn't unhappy with the tones I was getting, so I figured that I wouldn't get anything more than what I already had. Plus, the 3 was on waitlist so it was sort of an academic exercise anyway. What ultimately pushed...

Color coding of presets vanishes after updates

@unix-guy no this is all from the same computer. It recently updated to Win 11 but this was going on when it was still on Win 10. Refreshing the presets didn't make any difference. Did a search and found the file @Greg Ferguson mentioned in C:\Users\jesse\AppData\Roaming\Fractal Audio\Axe-Edit...

Color coding of presets vanishes after updates

I'm pretty sure this is some user error on my part, but after spending a while playing around with all the factory presets and color tagging some as favorites, the next time I updated Axe-Edit it was all gone. Obviously that would not be a very useful feature given how often the software updates...

Reverb types that are not an obvious “type” listed in the Wiki

Yes that's basically what I've been doing. I'd say that the low and high frequency decay times are a huge factor as well. Trying to combine elements you like from different reverbs is a challenge if the underlying type/algorithm is hidden.

Reverb types that are not an obvious “type” listed in the Wiki

So the Wiki lists a number of well known reverb types (room, plate, hall, etc) and many of the presets you see are obvious variations of those. But what about the non obvious ones? What is a cathedral considered? What about things like the Ice Castle or Opera House? I assumed initially that any...

Parallel chain with shunt adds gain ?

Yeah I was talking specifically about the delay. The standard mix law makes complete sense: it always sums zero. With delay, I see what you’re saying about there being a…huh huh…delay in the signal, but if you keep playing you’ll get the case where delay repeats are hitting at the same time as...

    Building an 80s Rack Preset

Rocco Pezzin has a great 80’s clean preset as well. I’d say don’t necessarily feel married to the Tri-Stereo Chorus. I think that the Dimension chorus sounds better in a lot of cases. Also fun to throw huge reverbs on these.

    Another Recommend Studio Monitors Thread

I had some old Rockit 6’s that died for the same reason. But even if they hadn’t, I never cared for how they sounded. I went through a similar thing you did and also didn’t want to spend huge money. I read a lot of positive reviews of the Dynaudio BM5 MK III’s and ultimately went for those. Many...

Parallel chain with shunt adds gain ?

Thanks everyone, all great replies. I was aware of the 100% mix in parallel and that is how I use delay. The different mix law on that block is interesting. So if the dry signal is unity until 50% and the wet signal hits unity at 50%, it seems like at 50% mix you’d be summing two unity gain...

Parallel chain with shunt adds gain ?

Where I’m getting a little bit lost is the difference between the summing behavior of parallel paths and the way you actually use parallel blocks, delay in particular. For example if I run delay in series I would use the mix to set the amount of delay I’m hearing and there would be no +6 dB...

    Bloom-style reverb?

He’s using a ton of decay time so it does sound cloud-like, but cloud reverbs don’t have that bloom/swell effect.

    Bloom-style reverb?

Awesome! Thanks for the replies! Never even considered the delay block in front of the reverb. The ADSR idea made sense to me but couldn’t figure out what to apply it to? Looking forward to checking this out. Thanks again!

    Bloom-style reverb?

Searched but what I was finding was discussion of “bloom” relating to amps. Curious if anyone has figured out a way to do a bloom-style reverb? Good example in this video starting around 0:45 where he’s playing chords. Basically the reverb level swells up after some time. Can’t figure out how...

Need factory preset sysx: Dizzy VH4 Ch 4 (Bank A, Preset 071)

Hi folks, hoping someone can help me with a fairly simple request. I'm looking for the sysx file for just the factory preset "Dizzy VH4 Ch4". I'm running FW 17.03 and in that version it's Bank A, Preset 071. My main patch is based off of this and I recently "upgraded" to FW 18.12. It might...
