Axe-FX III vs. Axe-FX II XL+

You should use whatever suits you. Attacking those who disagree with you doesn't make you right.

The modeling in the III is a decade more advanced than the II. Whether that sounds better or worse is subjective. What isn't subjective is that the modeling sounds and measures far closer to a tube amp and that is the primary intent.
I'm not attacking anyone, nor do I want to be right about anything, it's just an opinion. Deleting my message and blocking my right to defend myself against what you've said is not fair.

I still own the ax8, and for me the III sounds magnitudes better.
But you have to set the amp parameters very differently you were used to on a gen2 device... I'd start with a blank amp/cab preset and only use my ears and not eyes for setting up every parameter.
Also, compare using the same IRs you used on your AxeFx II

Thanks bro 🙏🏻

To his ears it apparently doesn’t. Maybe he’ll grow into it, or not. Apparently it was already awesome a decade ago, at least, that is what I take out of it.. I was perfectly happy with my II at the time as well. The only reason I bought the III was for the plexdelay. (Which still is what gives me chills). Never looked back.

I got my 2 in 2014 (i think). It sits 3 feet away from my 3. I play them both regularly.

The 2 still sounds great, but it does not sound 'better' than the 3 by any stretch of opinion or imagination. OP simply needs more time on the 3.

I own both units.

There are decades in development and decades in sound between both.

Fact is:
Settings are absolutely not interchangeable between both units.
Same settings will end up in very different -maybe strange- sounds.

What you like better is entirely up to your taste. No comment.

As my grandmother (born 1895) always said:
„Some people like sausages, others like green soap to eat.“

How to say...I think the new generations sound really good. Still there are one or 2 presets that I could not egalize, but it's a matter of taste. But when I bought the II I could not achieve some sounds of the ultra.

This doesn't mean that ultra is better than the II and samewise it doesn't mean that the II is better than the III. But after years of tweaking you can't expect to surpass with a new unit instantly

We're all creatures of habit and for the most part aren't too good at changes within our immediate environment.
I've seen this evidenced with folks changing cars, beds, paint colors around the house, letterboxes and practically everything else.

Going from the II to III was like moving from Alaska to Hawaii. My advice is to rip your clothes off and enjoy the sun!

A lot of good advice on this thread. I'll put in my two cents.
When I went from the II to the III, I was a bit at a loss. I imported presets using FracTool and everything sounded terrible.
I had to start from scratch. I stopped trying to re-create my presets and just created brand new ones.
Some years later, I re-imported some of my II presets just to see if I could re-create my old tone. Nah. Didn't work.
Start from scratch. An amp, a cab and a little reverb. Make that sound godly and then move on from there. I can promise, after a few weeks of diligent use, you won't want to go back.

As someone who owns both, they both sound good, and I still play the II a lot.. The differences between the new and 2nd gen units were not very apparent, but its very obvious now that the current units are superior in just about every way. However, I'd still grab my II over any other competing modeler.. but that's a whole different conversation..

First of all 95% of people should revise their thoughts....axe fx ii Xl was considered indistinguishible from the real amp but this is the normal behaviour when a new unit is born...the new has to be better ..anyway to me the major improvement is in the low end definition sonically speaking...in therms of features the III wins hands down.
