axe +motu?

Hey guys, although i do use my axe as an interface, the only thing I dislike is having to control the volume of BOTH the sound of the pc AND the axe itself (using XLR cables on OUTPUT1 on the axe). I've been looking to get a motu 828 Mk1 firewire audio interface (there are newer models but for a first timer i've found one for $150) to separate audio volumes and not have to control the volume via software. Is this the right solution for separating the volumes when listening through monitors?

Another purpose for the motu would be for live purposes when using click tracks (for drummer) and other backing tracks for the sound guy. Any tips or recommendations or experience with one of these? I really appreciate it!

I have the Motu 2408 mkIII and it works pretty well. But, in a direct comparison witht he Axe, it actually lacks some low end and comes out as a tad thin. I have no idea why there's a difference but there is.

The only thing I miss myself on the Axe with regards to monitoring is a seperate volume control for the headphone out.

I wouldn't want to compare the two, i just need separate volume functions for live/home usage so Tha'ts what i'm looking into. Overall would you say it has its advantages regardless of marks?

Yes! I have a motu 8pre and it comes with CUEMIX which is a completely separate mixer from windows. I freaking LOVE IT.

You can use it in the manner you're speaking about. Using CUEMIX it basically turns your PC in a live mixing board so it's fantastic.

I also like CUEMIX a lot because when I use the Axe FX as an interface in Cubase, I can still use Cuemix to output all the sound that is going through the AxeFX to my monitors without having to plug the monitors into the AxeFX. Since CueMix is completely independent of the Windows Sound drivers it can always be up even if the Motu isn't being used as the primary soundcard.

that's awesome, So then in other words the motu 828 Mk1 firewire audio interface is a good mark to go with? what about the Motu 2408 MK2? is this one FireWire/USB compatible? I'm so lost with these types of interfaces lol

Just looked into it. Cuemix isn't supported by the 828 mk1. The 2408 MK2 does have it. I don't believe the 2408 mk2 has firewire/USB compatibility. I believe it comes with a PCI card you hook it up to.

What's your budget dude?

i prefer going for something around 8 each

That 896 I posted that ebay link to should be good then. That's quite a steal actually for that price.

Another thing that's nice about the motu stuff is how easy it is to daisy chain them in the future if you need more inputs/outputs.

Also, not sure if it matters, but all the outputs on that thing are xlr so keep that in mind. That should be fine for almost all pro uses though.

My friend has this one, its pretty damn good but old as well isn't it? I saw a video of it from 2003 lol I'd buy it but i just hate ebay and bidding

The original 896 is old. This is the HD version which came out a few years after it. Shit, if I didn't already have two 8pre's daisychained I'd be all over this ebay deal.

I use the 4pre and have had things work out without issue. It has an app to control it from the iPad that helps out as well.

damn, so just to be clear.. even if the motu 2804 mkii has updated drivers, i wouldn't be able to use the cuebase? But i would still be able to use it for what i actually need it for?

the older model that has the firewire right? I'm being offered one of these for $100 with no issues on it.. that's why i ask lol is it worth getting still?
