I’m just getting started with recording at home on my PC and found this article helpful when hit with the 16-24-32 bit hurdle as far as recording.

That's not really the same thing.

We're talking about A/D converters.

The best A/D converters at this time have about 120 dB of dynamic range. That means there are 20 bits of usable information (120 / 6 = 20).

Therefore a 24 bit converter would output 20 bits of information and 4 bits of noise. A 32 bit converter would output 20 bits of information and 12 bits of noise. Until converters have a dynamic range of more than 144 dB, 24 bits is a sufficient word length.

It's nothing more than specmanship. The 32 bit converter is not better in any regard other than the marketing materials.

Extra gain somewhere else maybe?
It is specifically within the drive block. When bypassed all other behavior is expected. I was using the VS9

This was specifically in high gain scenarios as a note. Replicated the issue with the Archon bright, 6160block, 5153 50 watt blue, 5153 stealth blue, and the savage models. It did sound better though despite the overgaining issue. I checked all my other blocks and no level changes were noted.

I updated from 32.01 (final) as a note.

"Fixed an issue where overdriving the input of the Amp block, whether with an external Drive block or using the internal Input Boost (or both), causes excessive aliasing for some amp models."

Maybe something on that end of the formula?

EDIT: preset bundle attached. Cabs are freely available as note and NOT commercial.

This has been fixed for the next release.

It's Normal mode and Cork Sniffer mode ;-)

It's one thing to think we hear a difference/improvement when we're the one who just toggled the setting. I wonder how many people could tell in a blind test, and even if they hear a difference, could they tell which was which?

Last night I was screwing around with a block in the editor (FM3 but still applies) and I could hear subtle changes. Then I realized the block was bypassed. So….very subtle 😂

Fixes the issue with the USA Pre and USA IIC++ models.

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Notes

32.02

Improved Amp block preamp modeling.

Added “Oversampling” parameter to Drive block. When set to HIGH the oversampling rate is doubled which results in less aliasing. NOTE: This will increase CPU usage considerably.

Reduced CPU usage in some blocks.

Fixed an issue where overdriving the input of the Amp block, whether with an external Drive block or using the internal Input Boost (or both), causes excessive aliasing for some amp models.

Fixed wrong Overdrive Volume taper in Fox ODS models. Audition presets and adjust as necessary.

Fixed an issue with the Euro Uber model where certain combinations of Presence and Depth can cause a crash.
I noticed the issue with the USA Pre and USA IIC models; I'd play some Metallica riffs, yet I didn't become a world-class rock star with all the privileges that come with the position. Same issue with the Petrucci models. Didn't improve my skills even a bit. Definitely something to look into.

Much love, Cliff \m/

The only people who need to worry about the nitty gritty specifications and design of the models is Cliff and his team. The rest of us only need use our ears and dial-in tones that work for us after choosing the models that make up our amp, cab and effects chain…just like we did when we used their physical counterparts in the past. In the decades I played guitar before modeling I never wondered or worried about how electrons flowed from component to electronic component to the extent this discussion is now debating…I used my ears to dial-in tones I liked…done. Sometimes I think we are now so wrapped-up in the technology that we forget what our goals are.
