Advice on updating from v5.x

All,

I'm planning on updating to the latest firmware over the holiday break here, but my FM3 is currently on v5.x. I'm looking for advice on how to approach updating it. Should I update straight to v.12 or should I update to 6, 7, 8, 9, etc. one at a time in order? I want to do this right. I would've updated my device sooner/more often but I gig with it in two different bands and it's been quite busy playing out since my last update.

Additionally, I remember reading somewhere, I should backup everything up including my presets, which I will. I'll also update FM3 to the latest. I also remember reading I will need to reset my amp blocks in each preset to get my amp settings back. Is that still the case? I'm sorry if I come off sounding like an uninformed user, but like I mentioned, I want to do this right and can't think of a better place for advice.

yek, your insight is always appreciated. Thanks for confirming the answers to those questions. What about resetting my amp blocks after updating? Is that something I'll probably have to do? I remember having to do that in earlier versions...

Yeah, I think that would be wise. A "soft" reset (introduced in fw 10) at the least.

Also, In case you still have the original factory presets (or used as a Base for a Preset) these were also updated as of FW10, so you may want to check those release notes and recommended actions to be taken.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm starting the update now and that's a great heads up.

yek, Thank you for your always invaluable advice.

The update went great. For anyone else who finds this thread, I went in this order and it went well:
  1. Backed up everything in my current version.
  2. Downloaded v.12, updated FM3-Edit, and my stand-alone Fractal Bot.
  3. Installed v.12 via Fractal-Bot.
  4. Installed the DynaCabs from the v.12 install folder (my previous v.5.0.3 did not have these).
  5. Installed the new preset packs from v.10 via Fractal Bot.
  6. In FM3-Edit, selected all my user created presets and did a soft reset on all my amp blocks.
  7. Went through each scene for each preset and reduced the plate reverb Echo Density from 8 to 6 where my CPU was maxing out.
  8. Backed up everything via Fractal Bot.
I'm impressed with the tone that has evolved over the last 7 versions. I'm going to go play with some of the other new features now.

Thanks again for the help yek and TimPRS66.

This thread is very helpful for me as well. I will be updating from 9.01 to 12 (when the official release is ready) over the holidays. I wasn't sure about the soft reset but I'll plan to do that as well.

One additional question...wasn't the compressor updated and there are some things to keep in mind to manage CPU for that block?

As recommended above, read all the release notes for each version after the one you're on so you'll know what to be prepared for.

And yes, the Compressor does use more CPU now.
