Old Question! Same answer? or not!

Was keeping mine on the wall. My war guitar is a 10 or so year old PRS SE CU-24, and I had kind of been thinking recently "Huh...I don't remember it being quite that 'raspberry' colored before." I had an issue with one of the pickups and had to pull it, and under the pickup ring was the purple that I remembered. So it faded, very uniformly, the blue dye in their stain. This is NOT in a heavily-sunlit room (Pacific Northwest), and the room has had LED lights in it. It may just be a stability issue with those particular dyes, but it's made me rethink how much I want to display.

...and made me think about getting some auto vinyl wrap to cover the pinkish guitar I now have.

This has been something I’ve been battling for the past year or two. I was and have always been a strict always in the case when not being played person. It wasn’t such an issue when I only had one or two guitars. I still have a relatively small amount of guitars, but enough (9) and different that I would like to have quick access to them whenever I want. It’s mostly as I have gotten older and arthritic dealing with pulling the cases out, carrying them to a spot to open them, fiddling with the latches and closing them and put it to the side is enough of a hassle that I would like quick access to them.

I can’t see me hanging on the wall. Partly because I don’t have a lot of wall space in the room I use. The best and I have almost pulled the trigger a few times is a multi floor rack where I could cover them over to keep dust and dirt off and maybe help equalize the air and keep oxidation and fading at a minimum. A stand that would hold about 4 guitars including an acoustic would be sufficient. I could rotate guitars out periodically.

Something like this would fit the bill:

Colors fading is a common theme among guitars. Some finishes are more susceptible than others. For example, every Polar White Roadstar that Ibanez shipped 40 years ago has now faded into a rich creme color.

I’m kind of in both camps.

I have two guitars that stay in their cases: one I’m keeping as an heirloom and nostalgic purposes, and the other is too rare (and valuable to me) to risk damaging.

The rest either sit on stands or hang on the wall so they’re always within easy reach. If they weren’t that accessible, they’d rarely get played.

If you only have one or two guitars, it’s no big deal to keep them in their cases. But if you have multiple guitars, casing can be a real hassle, especially when you have to deal with more than one case. That’s the point at which many people start keeping a few guitars out and within easy reach.

Yes, but some fade is cool and others suck. White to nice ivory/yellow/cream or some of the other solid old DuPont or PPG fender colors are cool. Bright unusual transparent blends on top of sweet grained wood is another story. I guess I’m just too superficial about some things.

This is exactly what prompted me to buy the 5 NO CASES guitar floor rack and post this question...............

I had (sadly I sold it because I am an idiot) an old Clapton they said white but it turned like you describe here. Great guitar and I happen to like letting things, especially guitars age gracefully............I like the changes.

If you’re that worried about dust i dunno what to tell you besides keep a cloth on hand to wipe them.

I have a dog + house dust and its never really something I clock with my gear aside from pupfuzz on my pedalboards.

Yeah I have two cats to add to it…I have a rag always close by, but the dust that builds up over long time that gets in all the nooks and crannies of bridge and trem pieces and other hard to get places sucks. Also I wouldn’t use “worry” as quite the right word. I don’t have nightmares or anything about it, but if annoying things can be minimized or eliminated then as an evolved human I’m going to do it.

Always in their case. When I was 10 years old and just starting out my Dad, who played guitar, told me when I wasn't playing my guitar put it in the case. And over the last 50 years that's exactly what I've been doing and I have no regrets for doing so. To each their own.

Heh. We have three cats, one of whom has only one eye and a permanent sinus infection, thanks to a run-in with some BB-gun-wielding fool. She sneezes cat snot on everything that’s less than 20” above the floor. So I usually use wall hangers.

Fortunately, that stuff is water soluble.

Oh so sorry for your mucous projecting kittty. Asshole BB and Pellet gun people! Actually years ago a friend’s cat had a permanent sinus issue and he would sneeaze, sending kitty snot all over the place. Felt bad for the little guy

I’m only playing one guitar currently. It sits in its closed but unlatched case leaning against the wall. If I had more space I’d have all cases attached to a tilted rack. Open remove close.. done.

Yeah, it can be hard to watch. So you try to find the humor in it. Sometimes, if I’m taking a nap, she’ll jump up on the pillow, stick her nose in my ear, and wake me up with that Darth Vader breathing. So I lift the covers, she crawls underneath, turns around, lies down, and rests her head on my shoulder. Then she’ll look up at me lovingly with that one eye... and sneeze a big goober in my face. 🤧

I keep one out on a stand and the rest in their case. I don't usually gig that one anyway.
I play/practice more by keeping one out in view.
