Linux support

Thanks guys..
Just spent an hour down the rabbit hole..
The lack of Linux support and list of issues for fm3 edit is the only thing stopping me from going full Linux on my new laptop.
I've been holding off Installing anything on windows but I guess now I'll just have to suffer the indignity of Microsoft.
Come on fractal free us from Microsoft.

oh no i'd given up, now you have given me a hope.
is Xorg like wine?
What distro are you using?
I strongly suggest NOT going down that route:
  • it is not straightforward, with extra installations and/or configuration depending on your distribution (IIRC)
  • additional breakage can (and likely will) occur with some future update of FM3-Edit
  • you will only get MIDI control of the device, which is very slow, especially for any updates to the firmware or dynacabs

I don't like it, but the cleanest and simplest way is to use a virtual machine with a Windows installation. More so if (as your message suggests) you are not a veteran GNU/Linux user.

I had Linux years ago but gaming was annoying and crap so I went back to windows.
I thin I might switch my home computer from windows and leave the new laptop windows for the sake of the fm3.
Until fractal go official Linux friendly.

Fractal says the userbase does not justify the support. Linux just topped 5% market share of which a very small fraction likely have an interest in audio or own a Fractal product. Keep hoping/dreaming, but don't expect this to change.

I have said this on other threads but feel its applies here also.
Started last year running Linux in VM's became comfortable with Mint.

Linux does everything I want and does it well but; the problem is the music production side. Use Reaper already so that's no problem.
Axe Edit works in Bottles but it is clunky and frustrating, But Axe Edit is the least of the problems it's all the dam plugins virtual instruments and so on.
So added some drives to my machine and it now dual boots Win10/Mint. After October Mint will become my daily driver and Win10 will be trimmed down and be used for Audio production only.
Mac is not off the table but current machine is a beast and don't want to invest in new hardware right now.

Linux guys are very helpful and i always like to learn things and experiment BUT on a separate machine. I want a machine I can lean back on, plus i really like to play guitar and not worry about a problem that is stopping me in my tracks.

W11 wont run or wouldn't be safe on my computer but it's still a really good computer so I made it a dual boot W10/Linux Mint. With each update there is a chance something will break on the W10 and . . . would it be safe? So I decided to move everything to Linux Mint. There are so many little things that are better in Linux Mint than W10 and it's more customizable like Reaper. I've found multiple reasons to prefer to Linux Mint over W10 or W11. I've been using windows since 1990 and I'm done. I don't want the expense of building another computer right now and I don't want to do all the tweaking necessary to make W11 work right as would be necessary. And Linux has so much free software to do other things besides audio.

It would be great if Fractal would make a Linux version of AXE-EDIT III, I understand that would be a substantial investment but it's also good marketing or advertising. Reaper makes a native Linux version and there are a couple of other daws and some VSTs with native Linux Versions. FAS would be the modler of choice for Linux users. If there was more support for Linux i'm sure more people would use it. I'm sure a lot of people dont use Linux becasue there's less support for it, lets fix that. Now is the time.

I would love to at least see FAS post instructions on their website on how to install AXE-EDIT III using Bottles on Linux for those who want to. Maybe FAS doesn't have to "officially" support Linux but it could post all the necessary instructions and links to install AXE-EDIT III on Linux Mint.

Linux Mint is one of the more popular versions of Linux probaby because it's a lot like windows. Theres one called pop! OS which is mac like and many more. AV Linux was creatted specificaly for Audio production but again, it has little support. Maybe we can change that.

Whatever version of Linux you use the directions to Install AXE-EDIT III should be the same or at least very similar and it would be helpfull of somone at FAS would take the time to install Linux and get AXE-EDIT III working on it for the pourpouse of providing these instructions to their customers. I'm sure more people would use AXE-EDIT wih Linux if these instructions were available.

Unless something changes dramatically, the market share does not justify the resources to develop Axe-Edit for Linux. While I admire your desire to grow the user base of Linux, it is what it is.

Based on market share and current gaps, I'm much more inclined to think we'll eventually see versions for Android and iOS. Give people the option to use a device that they already own and have with them most of the time. I'd also be surprised not to see Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity in the next gen.

Tinfoil hat theory time 🤠: I would not be surprised if Fractal implemented Bluetooth/wifi capabilities in their next unit because

1) Their career website lists a programming position with experience dealing with Bluetooth and wifi. https://www.fractalaudio.com/careers/

2). Having FM3 (or whatever) edit available on your phone or tablet makes sense to have while your out doing a gig and need to make a change on the fly. Many other companies are and HAVE BEEN creating amp Sims that you can control from your phone. Frankly it would be kinda silly if Fractal didn't do something like this. It's been requested for a long time and 3rd party solutions have been made (FracPad).

Unfortunately I don't think a native Linux Axe Edit is going to happening. Linux has way too much red tape to get through. And there's so many different flavors of Linux that they would have to design for. It's much simpler keeping it with just Apple and Windows unfortunately.

Do i understand rightly from that page that Fractal devices run Linux internally? Most of the job posting is about Linux.
