Please add a Looper to the VP4

Please add a Looper to the VP4!

Also, I am looking forward to fractal doing their drifting looper/advanced creative looper/ shuffling looper. People are waking up to this block.
Like "Hx Shuffling looper" or Soma laboratories cosmos. (also 1/2 speed, 1/4 speed? (like pigtronix/ strymon volante)).

Fractal is the freaking best! I cannot BELIEVE how this pedal sounds though tube amps! Once it has a looper I can use only this pedal workstation and the amps and that's it!!!!

Yes please! A looper is a great tool for
  • practising
  • setting up presets, especially dialling in the EQs, testing different algorythms
and more. Please add a looper to the VP4 like you did to other Fractal devices. Even better if it had two parallel loops for Verse/Chorus parts.

One of the things that are stopping me from spending EUR 949 + shipping on the VP4 is the lack of a looper block.

What are the chances of them adding a looper?
Here's some things to consider…

[2] Loopers have unique hardware requirements, i.e. lots of memory. General-purpose guitar processors like the Axe-Fx don't need the amounts of memory that loopers require and adding that memory for a single effect would increase costs, probably considerably. Furthermore the processors used in products like the Axe-Fx are limited in the amount of memory they can address. The DSP used in the Axe-Fx III is the most powerful commercial DSP available but it's still limited in its memory address space.

Also, most loopers trade off bit-depth and sample rate for loop time.

Therefore you're unlikely to ever find a multi-effect that has the loop time and features as a dedicated looper.

If I were to make a dedicated looper I probably wouldn't use a DSP but something like an ARM with a lot of external address space. There isn't really much audio processing required, it's mostly memory access.
That's talking about the Axe-FX, which is a much more capable unit than the VP4, so a full-fledged looper isn't very likely.

The looper block in the other units is at best good for practice. OP, you sound like you want something performance worthy. I'd suggest buying a dedicated looper. Used ones can be had fairly inexpensively. A used Ditto can be had for around $50 (they're basic, but very good). For that price you could do so much more than what the looper block can accomplish.

One workaround is to have a very long delay block, then activate the "hold" function.

Otherwise, I have not been gigging with the VP4 since I need a looper, I just take the Volante + Ventris + Ditto + Oceans11 instead.
Kind of sucks I can't use the VP4 for these simple ambient gigs but whatever.

Not that anything in life matters at all, but wondering when the next update will be and if it will have the looper.

I did purchase the VP4 on the day the looper was announced as officially being worked on on these forums.

Again not that anything matters at all, but I have thought about selling my $900 VP4 lately.

A nice little looper wouldn't be a bad idea, however you could probably get pretty creative with delays already to do some nice looping, add in some modifiers/lfo/sequencer things and expression pedal and you could come up with some cool looping ideas already with what's in there.

Hi Brockstar, I know you from the v guitar forum. What a great forum! Fractal has always been a little over my head, although the vp4 should be quite manageable once it arrives. I understand using long delay times as a looper but not quite sure about modifiers, LFO and sequencer. If you have time could you elaborate a little bit? Thanks

Hey! I am new to fractal world as well but got me a VP4 a week or so ago and still learning my way around it. It's quite nice! :D All fractal units have modifiers, lfo's, adsr, sequencer stuff you can apply to certain parameters that allow it. Things that can be controlled via external expression, footswitches or automated by lfo's and sequencer and stuff :)

If they would add a looper it has to be something more capeable, which more features. It is still a fractal unit so people would expect some depth to it. I would love DL4 style stuff, like doubletime/halftime, playonce, retrigger play, undo etc. The HX Stomp does most of that (except the retrigger play, which only strymon timeline and eventide h90 does) so i would think that the Vp4 is verymich capeable of doing such things. When they add midiclock there should also be a way to lock on to this, like quantize the looper. I think the Eventide H90 and the TimeFactor do this. I have very much high hopes on fractel to be able to do this! All their units would profit from that!

Yeah, a DL4 style looper would be great.

As there is already a looper block in other Fractal units, I’m (perhaps incorrectly) assuming that the VP4 has enough processing power, though it might be a case of how to integrate the looper within the current VP4 workflow.

If the looper was a ‘universal’ feature, the B+C footswitch press (mentioned above) or using an external button to cycle between the different modes (presets, scenes, etc) and the looper could be a potential solution? Or if it the looper was one of the effects blocks, pressing the footswitch would then engage looper mode and the four foot switches would then control the looper functions ala the DL4.

See post #9 above...its not processing power, its a memory issue.
