Can you be specific about these issues please, the objectionable DRM and app store arrangements?

I'm trying to figure out how much of my long-standing strongly negative feelings about Apple are based in reality.

Did you install Bottles from the distro or from a flatpak? The flatpak version is sandboxed kinda. You need to use a program called flatseal to grant it permissions to everything, and even then it's not great. If you're using that, then I would suggest uninstalling it and installing the one from the distro. I just have the bottle set to run it with the latest Soda, DXVK, VK3D, and DXVK NVAPI in the settings.

There is no Ubuntu distro package available. Just flatpak anymore (https://usebottles.com/). I tried to compile bottles-51.17.tar.gz but that is also a flatpak package. I tried it again with Bottles from Flatpak, in Flatseal it has all rights it can get now, Soda, DXVK, VK3D is activated but I can't find DXVK NVAPI because I use an old Intel chipset. Still the same result. Window rendering is not up to date.

Oh, ok. The CachyOS (Arch) distro has a repo install for it. The one other thing I could suggest is that you try different runners for it. Try using Cafe, Wine-sys, or Proton instead of Soda. One of them might be more compatible with the Axe software and your video.
 
Years ago I had Windows and tried to get Pro Tools going (most likely my fault) - after a week I gave up and switched to Mac and Logic - essentially turned it on and installed Logic and stuff worked. That’s how I’ve found all things with Apple to be.

It seems like every time I read things about Linux, the conversation goes to “this can be done as a work-around” or “use this package and see if it will work” (probably wrong terminology cause I really have 0 experience with the actual system).

At this point in my life I just want things to work and Apple seems to do that for me. My 2018 Mac Mini never falters with anything I do musically, although I am looking at the new M4 Mini’s anyway.

This isn't a Linux issue... That's from people trying to run Windows applications inside an emulator on Linux. If there was a native app then it would work as expected.

And by the way, "Linux" is only the OS kernel... Everything thing else is a collection of separate dictated packages that is called of a "distribution" such as Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, or hundreds of others:

Neither OSX nor Windows gives so much as a rats ass about any of us. Us being those in the music and pro audio base. For every one of us there are probably a half of a million people that want to browse the internet and read email. Those are the people they care about and develop for. Audio by and large is an afterthought. So, pick your poison. Until WE get a platform designed by and for us this is going to be what it is.

Five years ago, I could understand that opinion, but with the development of AS-based models, especially the Mac Studio and now the M4, computers designed for audio and video work are far from an afterthought in 2025. NFW the power of an M3 or M4 is designed with web browsing and email reading in mind :).

For me the takeaway from this discussion is that I don't want to have this discussion, I want to be productive.

I don't want to be an IT guy, I want to make music. I've spent more time reading this thread than managing computer problems in my studio.

The only time I have had to think about my computers in a long time was the recent release of Sequoia and compatibility with my apps and plugins. I solved it in 2 seconds by waiting to upgrade, although I loaded it on an M1 Macbook Pro and it rocks.

Who’s “they”? You’re not obligated to use apps from the App Store. DRM from third parties (same as you’d use on Windows) is just that; third party. If you want to run MacOS with unsigned, Open Source apps, have at it. Nothing’s stopping you.

As for App Store DRM, it’s pretty damn nice, because it’s generous. I’ve got it on a Mini M1, MacBook Air M3, and my son has it on his Mini. If my wife and two daughters suddenly took up instruments, they could all install it too. Most DAWs are two installs. That’s it.

Can you name a BIG CORPORATION that DOES give a crap about ANYONE? I cannot. I'll stick with windows, not because I like MS, I don't!
But because it works fine for me and I have lots of $$$ invested in software. doesn't matter if I like MS, apple, the gov't, whomever.

  • No, not interested in complicating my life with the efforts associated with running a not-so-standard OS for all or part of my in home computing.
  • No, not interested in seeing Fractal spend precious resources supporting another OS if those reaources could otherwise be spent directly on product improvements.
  • I don't consider the end of an OS's support to be a sole or very significant reason to change to another OS since all OSs evolve to new versions requiring upgrades at some point. Hardware, OS, and App upgrades are part of the process of maintianing any computing environment no matter how small or large, and needs to be planned for, regardless of which hardware / OS / Apps are used. Many other considerations other than, (and maybe not even including), end-of-current-version-support, would need to be in play, for me to switch OS or hardware platforms. For quite a while now, I'm more than happy in Macland (could rail on Windows here, but will refrain since I find the ongoing moaning about Apple to be almost as nausiating as the moaning about Axfx UI).

Yup. I love Linux. I’ve been running it at home and lots at work for over 20 years. But until it becomes the norm on the desktop, it’s not going to happen on a grand scale for music production. Sure, there’s Reaper, Waveform, etc. and those work decently. But certainly not Windows/MacOS.

Yeah, I mean it’s a publicly traded company with responsibility to their shareholders, just like everyone else. Except that after supporting thousands of machines, they’ve provided the most reliability and support.
Microsoft lets you spend hundreds of thousands, and still tell you to get bent if you have issues.
 
I may regret saying this, but I'd appreciate it if some of you "Apple is evil" folks could pm me your reasoning.

I've had that same feeling for years, plus they've been outrageously expensive. However, the cost/performance ratio seems to have changed some recently, so I'm reevaluating, and i want to solidify my sense of how and why they're so evil. It's not like Microsoft is choirboy central either.
