Without naming names, the straw that broke the camel's back was that a good long time member had his account compromised and used to execute a scam.

One thing that might change this is when XenForo grows to require a passkey or 2FA. As long as this can be optional around here, it will be, and we'll need to keep this system turned off.
Oh man that sucks…

I think every type of good transaction/communication between members of this beautiful forum should be promoted.
Scammers can target people everywhere.

Out of curiosity, buying and selling aside, is there a reason why the extra security of 2FA is not just turned on anyway if it's an option? Is it that much of a hassle for members to do, even though people's accounts are getting compromised?

It’s an option for everyone now. Few choose to enable it.

Agreed. If there’s any way to revive the forum again in the future, feels like requiring PayPal goods and services as well as the “put your name on a sticky note or preset” would cut down on the majority of the scams.

Two factor identification would be icing on the cake.

Thanks Fractal! Have bought and sold many, many items on the forum and always had good experiences (outside of the obvious scammers).

We have zero ability to enforce this. Users decide in private conversations how payments are to be arranged.

Current AI technologies have shown this to be insufficient as a deterrent. And, in fact, increased confidence from buyers who couldn't discern whether images were manipulated or not.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Greatly disappointing. I funded almost all my Fractal upgrades selling to other forum members. Admittedly, I ran into several would-be scammers in the process, but Reverb and eBay are the worst for funding music-related endeavors. Before Etsy ruined Reverb it was at least a less cost-effective but reliable option. Now it's just a blood letting everytime you try to sell anything due to the absurd fee structure. Maybe Sweetwater's gear exchange will offer some opportunities.

I'll miss it but I understand because it happened to me last year.
I posted an FM3 for sale and somebody hacked my Fractal Forum account and used it to rip off another user who thought he was buying it.

The sad part is I do not believe that fractal has any financial risk here. Especially with disclaimers, etc-Use at your own risk..........Was also the way I always upgraded.....
The idea of selling a piece of gear on the forum that supports it is the ONLY IDEAL place, imho. But whatever!

There are a lot of long time members here on the forum, it is too bad we couldn’t use number of posts or perhaps a “verified” technique to allow trusted members to interact with other trusted members. But oh well, I realize this is an issue….

But when a long-time member's account gets hacked (which is what happened last time), then that does no good...
